I wanted to take a moment from the park updates to talk about our superintendent, James Rice, and his upcoming retirement this month. While it takes so many people to plan and open a park, James has been a leading force through it all.
We begin in 1973 and a young James Rice enters the education/outdoor recreation field. I bet he had no idea about the many lives he would touch and change over the years when his career began. After many years as a camp director, James decided to continue his epic career and join Texas Parks and Wildlife in 2004 as a biologist/interpretive specialist in the wildlife division. In 2011, the land that would become Albert and Bessie Kronkosky State Natural Area was donated to Texas Parks and Wildlife. As James and other biologists began their studies of the new property, little did he know that it would soon become home.
In 2013, James became the first superintendent of ABK SNA as the area was studied and plans for development started. Without staff, James recruited volunteers to help study the land and its important flora and fauna. This massive volunteer family led by James for over a decade made sure that natural and cultural resources were protected and their studies helped determine where facilities and trails could be built safely.
James also served in interim roles throughout his career at several parks and worked with many employees, making a difference wherever he served.
Now, after an amazing 50+ year career and finally getting staff, it is time for James to hang up his TPWD hat and enjoy a well-deserved retirement. James means so much to so many people and we can't thank him enough for being a staunch supporter of Texas's public lands.
Happy retirement, James! Thank you, Nancye Drukker, for some of the photos!
