Our Mission Creek Preserve is home to a wide variety of wildlife! Coyotes live in family groups but most often travel alone or in pairs and are typically most active at dusk and dawn. If you see a wild animal keep your distance and show them respect. Remember, we are are the visitors in their habitat.

It was a beautiful snowy morning here at our Ranger Station in Pioneertown!

This grumpy little guy is a Blainville’s Horned Lizard (Phrynosoma blainvillii). Horned lizards’ diet consists primarily of ants, spiders, beetles and grasshoppers. Horned Lizards can often be seen basking on rocks in the mornings but will seek shade during the heat of the day. Remember to keep your dogs on a leash while out on trail as dogs and cats often like to chase/kill horned lizards and other reptiles.

The Indian Loop Trail
This moderate 6.5 mile Loop is split into three sections.
Pipes Canyon Trail departs from the two track road behind the Ranger Station. It winds up the sandy wash for two miles through riparian willow forests crossing the riverbed. Hikers pass the “Olsen Ruins”, a stone homestead constructed in the early 1940’s. This relatively flat and easy section provides a family friendly, out and back hike. Be advised, the trail experienced a major flood event on 9/9/2017 which covered much of the trail in hard packed mud. Trail posts and wooden stakes have been placed to help navigate up canyon, as well as a new reroute and corridor cut through the brush.
Indian Springs Trail connects Pipes Canyon and Chaparrossa Peak Trails. It is the steepest part of the loop, with rock steps built in to help the climb. Hikers pass large skeletons of pinyon pines and oaks, burned in the 2006 Sawtooth Complex Fire. Views over Little Morongo Canyon and the distant volcanic mesas are worth the climb.
Chaparrosa Peak Trail leaves from the upper parking lot and quickly climbs the hillsides overlooking Pioneertown. The soil type transitions rapidly from granitic stacked rock formations, to dark basalt lava rock. Taking the southbound spur at the junction with the Indian Springs Trail takes you the full 3.3 miles and 1,000 ft up to Chaparrosa Peak, at 5,541’. From here the 360 degree view includes Joshua Tree and the Mojave to the east, Three Sisters Peaks to the west, San Jacinto Peak to the south.
Pioneertown Mountains Preserve is open daily to the public free of charge for passive recreation. For information about guided-hike opportunities, events, and trail access or conditions, call us at (760) 369-7105.
