Good morning,

Today I have the privilege of presenting the Golden Eagle Award. This is an award given from the Pioneer Police Department to a North Central staff member. This isn’t given for simply doing a job well; it is reserved for an individual who consistently goes above and beyond their normal duties to make life at our school genuinely enjoyable, positive, and meaningful for everyone.

To say this person does a lot for our school would be a massive understatement. As Mrs. Hasselbusch so perfectly put it, "Mrs. Carpenter is truly the heart of our junior high and high school community. She always has a smile on her face and a song in her heart, bringing positivity and joy to everyone around her each day." We all know this firsthand. Whether it’s her fantastic sense of humor or her daily emails to the staff, which are always uplifting, encouraging, and a bright spot in even our busiest days, Megan injects joy into our workplace. She is incredibly organized, dependable, and dedicated. She is the kind of person who will do anything for anyone at the drop of a hat, whether she is asked or simply notices a need that hasn't been met yet.

But Megan’s impact stretches far beyond her desk. Her devotion to our community is visible outside of school hours, where she volunteers her time coaching varsity softball, 10U rec softball, and leading in 4-H. She also pours countless hours of effort into supporting our FFA students at their various events.

Perhaps her most profound impact, however, happens in the quiet, everyday moments in the school office. Megan doesn't just manage schedules, file papers, or answer phones; she can also be seen counseling and mentoring the students who walk through the office door. I have personally witnessed her sitting one-on-one with a student who was downtrodden by their own mistakes, offering them grace and guidance. I’ve watched her skillfully calm down an irate teenager, helping him de-escalate and make the right choices. Her kindness, compassion, and advocacy for our students are evident in everything she does.

I don't believe any single one of us truly sees or knows all that Mrs. Carpenter does on a daily basis. She works behind the scenes, without a need for recognition, to keep our school running smoothly and happily. But today, we see you, Megan.

Thank you for your warmth, your tireless dedication, and for being an invaluable asset to our school family.

This program has been huge success bringing positivity to those who often go above and beyond in their roles mentoring and teaching our students at North Central Local Schools and I couldn't be more proud of Sgt. Mills for her initiative creating this program and the efforts she puts into each nominee. I can assure each recipient the award is heartfelt and we appreciate them very much.

COMMUNITY PRIDE AND RESOURCES:

As your police chief since 2009, most of you know I have strived to promote a community policing mindset. This simply means our police officers work with our community to find remedies and solutions to issues that arise from time to time.

We are very proud of this community. I am tremendously proud of the Pioneer Community and all that has been accomplished in the 17 years I've been your Chief of Police. Have there been setbacks and issues? Absolutely. No community is immune from these issues because the one constant we can count on is change and with change come growing pains and difficulties that must be worked out.

The Pioneer Community has invested in many resources over the years I've been here with the most recent being the Splash Pad. This is a wonderful resource for our community especially as the weather heats up later this summer. But, we need to respect the resource as a community. We need to protect it as it only takes a few to ruin it for everyone.

I ask you to help me help you and the entire community. Please report issues at the splash pad immediate when happening whether it be non family friendly behavior (language), bullying, or most importantly vandalism of this facility. The village has spent a lot of money for this resource and it is our hope to have it for a long time for everyone to enjoy. The rules for the splash pad are clearly posted there.

Just because I ask you to report it immediately doesn't mean my officers, or myself, will necessarily make the contact a legal interaction. It may just be a conversation on how to behave in public. However, if there is damage or bullying, legal avenues may be pursued.

Community policing works if everyone does their part and we work together with great communication. Not reporting issues at the time they are happening and then posting about them on social media later do nothing to address the issues. We'd rather handle the issues as they arise at the time of the incident.

And, I want to reiterate, we will NOT tolerate bullying or harassment of any kind in Pioneer. However, we can't address it if it isn't reported at the time of the incident. Please call us so we can help.

I sincerely care about this community, but I need your help. Let's work together to make Pioneer the best small community possible.

ARMED FORCES DAY 2026:

Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in May, and it is the day Americans celebrate their military. In 2026, it falls on Saturday, May 16.

Armed Forces Day is the proper day to honor all of the men and women currently serving, as well as those who have served and sacrificed to defend our freedom.

Armed Forces Day was created on August 31, 1949, by then-Secretary of Defense, Louis Johnson, to replace separate Army, Navy and Air Force Days. The event stemmed from the Armed Forces’ unification under one Department of Defense by then-President Harry S. Truman when he signed the National Security Act into law on July 26, 1947.

We salute all who currently serve this Great Nation and ensure our freedom.

NATIONAL POLICE WEEK 2026:

Each May, our nation comes together to honor the courage, sacrifice and dedication of law enforcement officers. Originally established by presidential proclamation President John F. Kennedy in 1962, National Police Week includes Peace Officers Memorial Day on May 15th and a week of observances recognizing officers who given their lives in the line of duty, as well as those who continue to serve and protect our communities with dedication and courage.

Events are centered in Washington, D.C. and include the Candlelight Vigil hosted by the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, the Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S) National Survivors Conference and the cornerstone of the week, the Fraternal Order of Police National Peace Officers Memorial Service on May 15th at the West Front of the United States Capitol.

National Police week is both a time of solemn remembrance and a celebration of the men and women who serve with integrity and bravery every day. It reminds us that behind every badge is a story of service, sacrifice and family.

We honor all who have served, currently serve and especially those who gave all to ensure their community's safety.

MILITARY SPOUSE DAY:

The first Military Spouse Appreciation Day was observed on May 23, 1984. It was established as a one-off observance through a proclamation by President Ronald Reagan. The day was later made into an annual observance by Secretary of Defense Casper Weinberger. In 1999, the U.S. Congress declared May as National Military Month to acknowledge the service of the men and women in the military.

Military Spouse Appreciation Day, which is also sometimes known as Military Spouse Day, aims to bring national attention to the role that military spouses play in maintaining the morale of the military and in supporting their significant others while they serve the country.

We honor all military spouses and their sacrifices while supporting their military loved ones.

FIREFIGHTER'S DAY:

International Firefighters' Day (IFFD) 2026 is on Monday, May 4, 2026. Celebrated annually on this date to coincide with St. Florian’s Day (patron saint of firefighters), it honors the dedication and sacrifices of firefighters worldwide. The day serves to honor those who have lost their lives in the line of duty and recognize current personnel.

We honor our brothers and sisters in red on this special day.

Public Service Recognition Week (PSRW) 2026 runs from May 3–9, 2026, celebrating the federal, state, county, and local government employees who serve the nation. This week highlights the dedication of public servants to honor their impact on their communities.
