Last night at 9:04 PM Piney Creek Fire was dispatched to assist New River Fire and Rescue with a working Structure Fire on Old Hwy 16 in the Grassy Creek Community. Members had just returned to the station from training with New River. New River requested tankers and Tanker 603 and Engine/Tanker 602 responded. Once on scene members assisted with extinguishment/overhaul and cleared just after 11:00 PM. Always great to help our neighbors on the other shore!

Yesterday afternoon at 6:26 PM Piney Creek Fire was dispatched to a structure fire in the Bear Creek Community of our district. First arriving member reported a three story home fully involved. Sparta’s ladder truck played a crucial role in extinguishment of this fire. Overhaul was extensive due to the size of the home and all units cleared the scene just after midnight. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. A special thanks to our mutual aid partners for their assistance with this fire. Also a special thank you to our community members for food and drinks for the volunteers.

Message to the community:

The state and local burn ban was lifted this morning effective at 8 am for Alleghany County.
Are we out of the woods yet? Not necessarily.
The risk for wildfires is still present with dry fuels. The fuel load in timber from Hurricane Helene damage will pose a risk for years to come. NCFS has left the burn ban in place for several NC counties. The map for those counties is in the original post comments from NCFS.
Please use caution when burning! Have a plan to extinguish your fire should winds increase/shift or the fire spreads. Don’t be afraid to call 911 before things get out of hand!

It's festival week!
When you arrive at the fairgrounds (GPS: 1375 US HWY 21 N) Friday 5-9pm and Saturday 9am - 4pm, our parking volunteers will be on-site to efficiently direct you into a parking spot. Following their instructions will get you off the roadway and into the festival as quickly as possible.
We look forward to seeing you Saturday at the Fourth Annual Fried Apple Pie Festival.
