For several years, Army Veteran Robert Lindemann suffered from uncontrolled focal epilepsy with seizures originating deep in his right temporal lobe.

In the past, surgeons would treat focal epilepsy by performing a craniotomy and remove a large amount of the temporal lobe. But thanks to new Visualase V2 technology, brain surgery is now less invasive and involves a hole smaller than a pencil eraser.

Mr. Lindeman was the first Veteran in the VA health care system to receive the surgery which was performed by Houston VA surgeons.

“This minimally invasive procedure isn’t just about small incisions or faster recovery,” said Dr. Garrett Banks, a neurosurgeon at the Houston VA. “It’s about preserving the cognitive abilities, dignity and well-being of the Veteran patient. The Visualase system can treat focal epilepsy with very little trauma, allowing people to return to their lives with less pain, fewer complications, and greater confidence.”
