The Bell County Volunteer Fire Department has many ways to serve, from being an auxiliary member in a support role, serving as a firefighter, working with a specific Company Station, serving as a department officer, or working within our Junior Firefighting Program.
Erica Patterson joined the BCVFD in 2020 and actively works emergency calls, from structure fires, woodland, automobile accidents and EMS request for mutual aid.
At 36yrs of age, she is one of our active women firefighter. She is a member of the Right Fork Company, Station 5, serving that area and community. Erica is also a member of the Junior Firefighter Program Leadership Team. In April of 2022, Department Fire Chief, Tim Howard, appointed Erica on this unique team. She serves alongside four others on the BCVFD JrFF Leadership Team.
We asked why she joined and why she serves as Volunteer Firefighter, she responded by sharing, “I worked in a nursing home facility, when I was 18 years of age. I’ve always had a very soft heart for helping people and this is why I became a volunteer firefighter. I love being a member, I love serving others and I love everyone that is a volunteer here in the department. Everyone is all like family to me.”
Being a member of the Leadership Team and working with the Junior Firefighters, all the kids, she said was a lot of fun. Help us thank Erica for her service and lets applaud her commitment to make a difference and for following her passions.

Remember that all outside burning is prohibited in Davidson County unless otherwise permitted. Sunday 20 Acres burned and took 4 hours to bring under control. Do your part to help prevent brush fires!

What got me started as a JrFF BCVFD?

Honestly, I joined the BCVFD Junior’s because it was the only program I knew about in Bell County that you could be a part of and help other people as a teenager.

What is my Career goal?

I like helping people, that’s my real personal mission in life.

I love being a Junior Firefighter, but that’s not my career goal. I want to work in law enforcement.
This would give me two ways to help people.

I first saw a Facebook post on the Fire Department’s page. I remember the dates exactly. The post was on December 4th and my mother drove me to Headquarters to fill out an application on December 9, 2020.

Jesse Hall played a huge role in getting me interested in public service.

Being a Junior Volunteer Firefighter gives me hands on experience and I love it.

I wish I could go into a burning building as a Junior Firefighter.
I wish I could talk on our two-way radios, but I know my time will come.

Being a Junior is awesome.

Ray C Vannest, Assistant Chief
Bell County Volunteer Fire Dept
Junior Firefighter Program.

Thursday, July 28, 2022, at 6:24pm, The Bell County Volunteer Fire Department responded to a structure fire in the Calloway Company, Station 7 area.

Upon arrival, Volunteer Firefighters discovered a kitchen fire. While cooking family dinner and handling a kettle of hot oil, there was a combustion. The fire was an accident. We are thankful that quick action to call 911, evacuating the residence, including two pets and addressing the heat source all played a role in containing the fire.

28 Volunteer Firefighters and 4 Pumpers responded to this emergency call. Calloway, East Pineville, Right Fork, Colmar Fourmile and Arjay Company Volunteer Firefighters.

The BCVFD conducted salvage and overhaul operations. Power had been discounted and was able to be restored after operations ended. The residence was located on Polly Blevins Road in Hulen, Ky. We are working in corporation with the American Red Cross as a ministry to this family in this crisis.

Note: 3 great courses of action, when fighting a grease fire:

1). Have an ABC extinguisher always handy is the best option.

2). Remove or cut off the heat source. Examples, cover the fire with a non-flammable lid

3). Salt or a large box of baking soda, like you would find in a laundry aisle releases carbon dioxide, which will smoother flames.
