🌧️ It’s Week 2 of and we’re exploring some of the environmental impacts of stormwater pollution!

🚫 Don't Feed the Algae

Did you know that leaves, grass clippings, fertilizers, and pet waste can all contribute to water pollution when they enter storm drains? These pollutants add excess nutrients to our waterways, which can fuel harmful algal blooms and impact local ecosystems.

As Floridians know all too well, it only takes one storm. πŸŒ€

With the 2026 hurricane season underway, I encourage every resident to watch Project Phoenix 2.0 by the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council.

It’s a realistic look at a worst-case scenario storm hitting our area, detailing the profound impact on our neighborhoods, hospitals, and local economies.

πŸŽ₯ I have dropped the link to the full video in the comments below.

The lesson here is simple: When a major storm threatens our area and evacuation orders are issued, you need to leave. Property can be rebuilt, but lives cannot.

Please take time this week while we are still early in the season to check your evacuation zone, stock your emergency kits, and talk through a plan with your family. Stay safe, stay informed, and let's get ready together.

This graphic shows how common sources of stormwater pollution can make their way into our waterways.

Unlike wastewater, stormwater is not treated before entering our ponds, lakes, streams, Tampa Bay, and the Gulf. Along the way, it can pick up contaminants like sediment, yard waste, automotive fluids, litter, and excess fertilizer.

This week, we’re kicking off an introduction to stormwater and why protecting our waterways matters. Stay tuned throughout the month for more tips, resources, and ways you can help keep our waters clean! 🌊

πŸ“£ Tampa Bay Residents, from Citrus to Sarasota County, we want to hear from YOU! πŸ“£

Flooding impacts many areas across our region. We are asking community members to share their real-life experiences through a regional flood survey.

Your feedback will help the us and the lead team for the Tampa Bay Coastal Master Plan (TBCMP) better understand chronic flooding and where it’s happening across Tampa Bay 🌧️

Your responses will also be used to develop community-drawn flood maps and help prioritize nature-based projects that reduce flood risk, such as living shorelines, wetlands, and other resilient solutions.

πŸ“ Take the Survey before June 10! https://www.partimap.eu/en/p/TBCMP-Flood-Survey/0

Every response helps paint a clearer picture of flooding across the region. Please share with your neighbors and community!
