The Pine Plains Police Department has been made aware of a Spoofing scam involving this Department. The individual(s) are calling people using the Police Department phone number and telling the potential victim that either they or someone they know has a warrant and are demanding money.

Under no circumstances will the Pine Plains Police Department ask for money or any other kind of payment for a warrant or for any other police matter. Please report these incidents as soon as possible. Make your family and friends aware of these scams. The elderly often times fall victim to these types of scams. Any further questions please do not hesitate to call us at 518-398-8601 or email us at [email protected]
Happy Holidays and be safe

Spoofing: Public telephone networks often provide caller ID information, which includes the caller's number and sometimes the caller's name, with each call. However, some technologies (especially in Voice over IP (VoIP) networks) allow callers to forge caller ID information and present false names and numbers. Gateways between networks that allow such spoofing and other public networks then forward that false information. Since spoofed calls can originate from other countries, the laws in the receiver's country may not apply to the caller. This limits laws' effectiveness against the use of spoofed caller ID information to further a scam.
