There may be a little confusion if you read this week's article on the front page of the Pine Bluffs Post. Watering is not restricted to evenings only - the hours that you may not water are from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm - all other times are appropriate. There is also not a limit of watering one hour per day; you should not water excessively. Each yard and watering system is unique, and in many cases watering one area of your yard, or one zone from your sprinkler system, for a full hour would be excessive. However, you may have a large yard with several watering zones. If this is the case, then it may take an hour or longer to water each zone in succession. Here are some useful guidelines for conserving water:
Inspect for leaks regularly. Check faucets, toilets, pipes, and irrigation systems for leaks or inefficiencies. Prompt repairs can prevent water waste, lower utility costs, and protect property from damage.
Adopt a consistent watering schedule. Limit lawn watering to three days per week on alternating days. This approach helps reduce demand on groundwater resources, maintain adequate water pressure, and support firefighting capabilities.
Apply the appropriate amount of water. Most lawns, including Kentucky bluegrass, require approximately 1.5 to 2 inches of water per week during summer months. This equates to roughly 0.5 to 0.7 inches per watering session when watering three times per week.
Water deeply, not frequently. Deep watering promotes stronger, drought-resistant root systems and reduces susceptibility to disease and wind-related drying.
Avoid overwatering. Signs such as surface runoff or mushroom growth indicate excessive watering. If runoff occurs, consider watering in shorter intervals (e.g., two 10-minute cycles with a break in between) to allow for proper absorption.
Optimize sprinkler performance. Ensure sprinkler heads are properly aligned and not spraying pavement, structures, or above plant height.
Practice efficient cleaning methods. When washing vehicles, use a shut-off nozzle and a bucket. Whenever possible, clean outdoor furniture over lawn areas rather than hard surfaces to minimize runoff.
What do I do if I plant sod, seed, or trees? If you are establishing a new lawn or have recently planted new trees, please contact Town Hall at (307) 245‑3746. Your information will be shared with our inspectors so you are not cited for excessive watering.
