About Us

Who We Are The Voices for Children Court Appointed Special Advocate Program is a non-profit organization that advocates for abused and neglected children throughout the court process. As trained volunteers, VFC Advocates are appointed by the Judge to advocate for what they feel is in the child’s best interest. The advocates speak up for their assigned child in the court and will let the Judge know what the child wants and needs. Our goal is to help the child find a safe and permanent home as quickly as possible.

What We Do Voices for Children Advocates speak to all persons related to the child’s case. This may include teachers, DHS family service workers, counselors, neighbors, relatives, physicians, ministers, foster parents, or any person that would have information concerning the child. The advocate reports his or her findings to the Judge through a court report. The report gives the court background and current information as well as concerns and recommendations to enable the Judge to make informed decisions.

Qualifications Becoming a CASA volunteer is easy! You do not need a degree in Social Work or multiple years of experience with children. All you need is a passion for abused children and the requirements below.

Minimum age of 21.

No criminal convictions or pending charges for a felony or misdemeanor involving a s*x offense, child abuse or neglect, or acts that pose a risk to children or the Voices for Children program’s credibility.

Interview with Voices for Children staff member.

Consent to a criminal and reference background check.

Attend a 30 hour training course

Role of a CASA Volunteer The role of a CASA volunteer is challenging, yet so rewarding. The job description of a CASA volunteer includes:

Committing 4 - 10 hours per month on assigned case.

Visiting assigned child/children, outside of court, in person a minimum of once every 30 days.

Reviewing and maintaining complete records about the case, including appointments, interviews, and information gathered about the child and the child’s life circumstances.

Attending all family-centered meetings at DHS, mediations, and court hearing, and report any new incidents of abuse or neglect to VFC supervisors and appropriate authorities.

Determining if a permanent plan has been created for the child and if appropriate services are being provided to the child and family.

Providing a signed written report to the VFC office 10 business days prior to the hearing including only facts, concerns, and recommendations.

Does not provide direct services to any party that could lead to any conflict of interest or potential liability, or cause a child or family to become dependent on the VFC volunteer for services that should be provide by other agencies or organizations.

Makes contact with CASA Supervisor at least once a month and submist monthly contact logs into Optima.

Not related to any parties involved in a case assigned to him or her or employed in a position and/or agency that result in a conflict of interest.
