Surry County Emergency Services has been selected to receive funding through the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services’ Rural Health Transformation Program. As part of a statewide $10 million investment awarded to 39 EMS agencies, the funding will help strengthen the EMS workforce and expand behavioral health and substance use disorder services in rural communities.

The award will support and expand Surry County EMS’s Mobile Integrated Health and Community Paramedic programs by addressing rural healthcare challenges such as behavioral health response, care coordination, substance use recovery, and improved access to healthcare services throughout Surry County.

We are grateful for the support of the Surry County Board of Commissioners and County Administration throughout this process. Their willingness to support our vision and pursue opportunities such as this allows us to continue strengthening our workforce, expanding services, and improving healthcare access for the citizens of Surry County.

We also appreciate the North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services, NCDHHS, and our healthcare partners for their investment in rural EMS and their commitment to improving outcomes for the communities we serve.

North Carolina is investing $10 million to help EMS agencies expand access to care in rural communities.

Through Mobile Integrated Health programs, EMS teams can do more than respond to emergencies. These investments will help connect people to mental health services, substance use treatment, recovery support and follow-up care after an overdose.

By strengthening the EMS workforce and expanding community-based care, North Carolina is helping more people get the support they need closer to home.

🔥 HEADS UP: High Fire Danger has returned to most of the state, a result of abnormally dry fuel conditions further exacerbated by high temperatures low relative humidity, and gusty SW winds of 10-25MPH, resulting in high fire danger across most of North Carolina! This will continue this afternoon and into Sunday.

Fire fuels could easily ignite and spread rapidly in these conditions. Residents and visitors to the area are urged to properly dispose of cigarette butts, matches, and any other flammable items in appropriate containers. Exercise caution if operating any equipment that could create sparks, and keep vehicles off dry leaves and grass.

💦 🚒Team 73 and Mutual Aid Partners Train for Rural Big Water Operations 🚒💦

Westfield VFD Training Night

On 05/28/2026, Westfield VFD (Station 73) hosted a mutual aid rural water supply training with our neighboring departments to sharpen our big water operations and interdepartmental coordination.

We trained on:
- Drafting from static water sources for sustained flow 💦
- Tanker shuttle operations to keep water moving 🚛💧
- Relay pumping and LDH hose lays for volume over distance 🧑‍🚒
- Drop tank setup and operations for continuous supply ⛽
- Big water with 2 master streams (water monitors), emphasizing volume (1000 GPM from the primary engine pump) vs pressure 💥💦

Throughout the evolution, we continuously flowed well over 50,000 gallons of water, demonstrating our ability to move and manage big water in a rural environment.

Departments involved (by station number):
- Double Creek Volunteer Fire and Rescue Inc. (Station 41)
- Four Way Volunteer Fire Department (Station 68)
- Westfield Volunteer Fire Department (Station 73) – Host department
- Pilot K**b Vol. Fire Department (Station 76)

Mutual aid partners from across Surry County and neighboring Stokes County helped us refine both volume and pressure pumping while strengthening interdepartmental coordination.

A special thank you to Hutchens Farms, an NC Century Farm, for allowing us to use their farm to coordinate this training and support rural fire protection efforts in our community. 🌾🚒

🔥🚨Smoke Alarm Saturday is here! 🚨🔥

Westfield Volunteer Fire Department will be out in our district beginning this Saturday at 10:00 AM and through next Friday, canvassing the community and installing free smoke detectors (while supplies last) in homes. 🏠🧯

If you or someone you know needs a working smoke alarm, this is a great time to get one installed at no cost, while supplies last. Our crews will come out, install the detector, and make sure it’s working properly to help keep your family safe. ❤️
