On Saturday August 1st, 2026, at approximately 6:15 P.M. the Sheriff’s Dept. received a 911 call about a subject breaking into a building at 199 Laclede Street in St. Francis. When the deputy arrived the subject had left, but the deputy took a statement from the owner of the building. The deputy was advised that the subject might live in a camper behind the residence. The deputy made contact with the individual and learned he was from Michigan. On Sunday deputies went back to 399 Rice Street with a warrant to arrest 60yr old James Ray of Flint, Michigan. When the deputies arrived at the address they came into contact with 39yr old. Michael Schornik of Nashville, Tennessee. The deputies advised Mr. Schornik they were looking for James Ray, he advised them he was in the camping trailer. Mr. Schornik took the deputies to the door and opened it, he then told Mr. Ray to come out. Deputies then took Mr. Ray into custody, and while doing this smelled the odor of Ma*****na coming from the trailer. Deputies asked for permission to search the trailer, and it was granted. Deputies found several drug related items in the trailer, in addition to 2 handguns. Deputies then took Mr. Schornik into custody. They both were transported to the Clay County Detention Center. Mr. Rays was booked in on the charges of breaking and Entering/ Building or Structure, Criminal Trespass, Possession of M**h or Co***ne LT 2GM, Simultaneous Possession of Drugs and Fi****ms, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Possession of SCH VI OR V LT 28GM, Possession of Fi****ms by Certain Persons. Mr. Schornik was booked in for Possession of M**h or Co***ne LT 2GM, Simultaneous Possession of Drugs and Fi****ms, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Possession of SCH VI or V LT 28GM, and Possession of Fi****ms by Certain Persons. Mr. Ray has a Felony Warrant at this time out of Flint, Michigan for Burglary, but they will not extradite.

On Tuesday, July 28th, 2026, the Sheriff’s Department received a call early that morning from the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force. They advised the Sheriff’s Dept. that they were going to be in Clay County looking for a fugitive they were tracking. At approximately 10:30 A.M. the Marshals Task Force contacted the Sheriff’s Dept. to request deputies come to their location on County Road 234 West of K**b. They advised they had their fugitive in custody and another subject. They also advised they had found illegal drugs in their vehicle. Deputies responded to their location and took the two subjects into their custody. They also took possession of the drugs. The Sheriff’s Dept. transported 34 yr. old Tanner Jacob Turner of Poplar Bluff, Missouri to the Clay County Detention Center. He is being held on a Fugitive Warrant out of Butler County Missouri, and new charges in Clay County. His new charges are Possession of M**h or Co***ne GT 2GM but LT 200GM and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. The Sheriff’s Dept. also transported 67yr. old Jacky Eugene White of Lafe (Clay County) to the Detention Center. Mr. White was booked in on the following charges: Possession of M**h or Co***ne GT 10GM but LT 200GM and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. The Sheriff’s Dept. then gathered enough information to obtain a search warrant. District Judge Curtis Hitt issued a Search Warrant for Mr. White’s residence and premises at 555 County Road 406 Lafe (Clay County). At 7:00 P.M. Tuesday, the sheriff’s Dept. executed a search warrant at Mr. Whites property. Mr. White is a convicted Felon and the Sheriff’s Dept. located several fi****ms, including a loaded 9MM pistol located under his bedroom pillow. The Sheriff’s Dept. also located a large amount of illegal drugs, and a small m**h lab. Mr. White will now have additional charges of: Simultaneous Possession of Drugs and Fi****ms, Possession of Fi****ms by Certain Persons, Manufacture of M**hamphetamine with Previous Conviction, Possession of M**h or Co***ne with Purpose to Deliver GT 10GM but LT 200GM, Possession of M**h or Co***ne GT 10GM but LT 200GM, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Possession of SCH VI LT 4OZ.

The Clay County Sheriff's Department is currently accepting applications for the position of Full-Time Dispatcher. Applicants must be able to pass a Drug Test, have a clean background, and have a Highschool diploma or equivalent to one.

On Sunday July 19th, 2026, at approximately 4:45 P.M. a deputy made a traffic stop on Highway 135 close to County Road 234. The deputy found that the driver had a warrant out of Truman P.D. The driver also had a suspended driver's license. The deputy took 37yr old Justin Blain Coker of Corning into custody. When a search was conducted on the vehicle, an illegal substance was found. Mr. Coker was transported to the Clay County Detention Center and booked in on the following charges: Possession of Controlled substance SCH I Or II 2GM and Driving on Suspended Driver's License.

On Tuesday, July 14th, 2026, at approximately 3:55 P.M. a deputy was southbound on Highway 139 toward Leonard. When the deputy met a vehicle that the driver appeared to try to hide his face, and the vehicle did not display a license plate. When the deputy turned around to stop the vehicle, the driver sped up. The deputy tried to make a traffic stop, but the driver’s vehicle speed was 95 M.P.H. When the driver reached Highway 90 northbound, he ran the stop sign. He then traveled north on County Road 538, where he almost hit a pickup truck. When the driver came to County Road 528, he turned West, where he almost hit a spray tractor. He then traveled West and turned into a residence. The subject got out of the vehicle, and he tried to hide behind the house. The deputy took 33yr old Nathanial Weatherspoon of Rector into custody. Mr. Weatherspoon was transported to the Clay County Detention Center and booked in on the following charges: Felony Fleeing, No Liability Insurance, Driving on Suspended Driver’s License, and Reckless Driving.

On Thursday July 9th, at 12:30 A.M. a deputy observed a small red motorcycle traveling South on the old highway heading toward Reyno. The motorcycle had no tail light or reflectors on the back. The deputy made a traffic stop on the motorcycle. When he came into contact with 62yr. old Harlan Freeman Gronin of Reyno he took his Driver’s License and ran a check. The check showed he had a Failure to Appear Warrant out of Randolph County. The deputy then asked if he had anything on him and was advised he had a gun. The deputy retrieved a gun out of Mr. Gronin’s waist band. Mr. Gronin was taken into custody and conducted a search of him and the motorcycle. After the search he was taken into the Clay County Detention Center and booked in on the following charges: Simultaneous Possession of Drugs and Fi****ms, Possession of M**h or Co***ne LT 2GM, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Possession of SCH VI LT 4OZ, and No Tail Lamps.

On Wednesday July 8th, 2026, at approximately 10 A.M. the Sheriff’s Dept. received a call about a man at the K**bel store who was in an altered state. When the deputy arrived, he came into contact with 62yr. old John Gerald Hudack of Pontiac, Michigan. The deputy also saw that his vehicle had been driven with a flat tire and was almost on the rim. The car also had extreme damage to the driver’s side from hitting som**hing. When the deputy looked in the car he noticed a ma*****na cigarette in the ash tray. Mr. Hudack advised the deputy he had several Ma*****na ci******es in the car that he had purchased from a dispensary in Michigan. Mr. Hudack was then taken into custody, and a search was conducted on the vehicle. During the search other illegal drugs and a weapon were found Mr. Hudack was transported to the Clay County detention Center and booked in on the following charges: Simultaneous Possession of Drugs and Fi****ms, Possession of SCH I Or II GT 2GM but LT 10GM, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Possession of SCH VI LT 4 OZ.
