The South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) hosted a public meeting open house on June 4, 2026, to share the proposed design for the U.S. Highway 85 reconstruction project from the Wyoming state line to U.S. Highway 14A (Cheyenne Crossing) in Lawrence County. The purpose of a public meeting for a proposed project is to provide information and gather public input.

For those who could not attend the June public meeting open house or may desire additional information on the overall proposed project, material is available online at https://dot.sd.gov/ushighway85towy.

Based upon requests from members of the public, the SDDOT has extended the written comment period from the original date of Friday, June 19, 2026, to Friday, Sept. 4, 2026. The date extension will maximize the opportunity for public engagement. Written comments may be made on the website at https://dot.sd.gov/ushighway85towy or via email to Mark Malone at [email protected].

For more information, contact Mark Malone, SDDOT Project Manager, at 605-773-5409 or via email at [email protected].

On Monday, June 15, 2026, crews will begin a chip seal and fog seal project on several routes in the Mobridge area. Weather dependent, the contractor will move from one project to the next in the following scheduled order:

• S.D. Highway 63 – Project begins at the U.S. Highway 212 junction south to the Cheyenne River;
• S.D. Highway 65 – Project begins at the Highway 212 junction north to S.D. Highway 20; and
• U.S. Highway 12 – Project begins at the south U.S. Highway 83 junction to and through Bowdle.

During the project, traffic will be reduced to one lane and guided with the use of flaggers and a pilot car. Delays up to 15 minutes should be expected while traveling through the work area during daytime hours.

Loose gravel and fresh oil will be present in the project area for two weeks. Traffic is advised to reduce speed or use an alternate route during this time.

The prime contractor for this $3.3 million project is Jensen Rock and Sand, Inc. of Mobridge, SD. The overall project completion date is Friday, Sept. 25, 2026.

Be cautious, drivers!

Colonel Casey Collins with the South Dakota Highway Patrol reminds drivers to slow down, stay alert, and watch for crews in work zones as you travel across South Dakota.

Construction zones are tight and require a driver’s full attention. Buckle up and put your phone down to help keep both workers and drivers safe.

With temperatures around freezing, snow is falling across portions of the higher elevations of the Black Hills this morning. Over the past week we've had high temperatures, fire weather, severe weather, wind (always wind, it would be strange if we had calm days), and now a little snow. We have fun here! Image courtesy of

Towing a trailer will impact how any vehicle drives. The larger the towed object in comparison to the tow vehicle, the greater the performance impact will be. Thus, knowing what your tow vehicle is capable of towing is just as important as selecting the right trailer.

When buying a hitch, use the tow vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations based on the trailer type and gross vehicle weight rating. Learn more about hitching here: https://www.trailersafetyweek.com/hitching/
