NEW 8-1-1 RULE:
South Dakota 811 is moving to a Midnight State effective July 1, 2026! Once you submit a locate request, the 48 hour countdown for locator response will not begin immediately.
Once this new rule goes into effect, the 48 hour countdown to excavation readiness will begin at 12:01 am the day after the notification center receives your request. From that point, the utilities have 48 hours to mark their underground lines. Saturdays, Sundays, legal and state holidays do not count toward the 48 hours.
This will impact Normal / Routine; Update; Appointment; Planning and Project tickets. All other tickets will NOT be affected by this change.
As the excavator, please take note of this change. Pay extra attention to the start date and start time on your tickets! Do not dig before the start time and date on your ticket.

The South Dakota Department of Public Safety and State Fire Marshal’s Office were proud to support the 140th Annual South Dakota State Fire School in Watertown this weekend, which brought over 500 firefighters together for training, professional development, and exposure to the latest firefighting technologies.
SD Deputy Fire Marshals taught the Fire Instructor Certification Course during the event,
one of several available classes over the weekend. They provided instruction to firefighters from around the state adding to the cadre of certified fire instructors state-wide. Shown leading the class is Deputy FM Mike Jones. State Fire Marshal Doug Hinkle, Chief Deputy Fire Marshal Damon Hartman, and Deputy Fire Marshals Kyle Moser, Michael Helgerson and Chris Noeldner all took part in the instruction.

A RED FLAG WARNING is in effect for portions of southwestern SD from 12 pm to 8 pm mt today . Humidities as low as 13% and northwest winds gusting up to 35 mph will combine with dry fuels to create critical fire weather conditions. Grassland fire danger ranges from MODERATE to VERY HIGH today in western SD. Use extra caution with heat sources outdoors that could spark a fire!

State Fire School is underway with hundreds of SD firefighters on-site getting training and learning about the latest technoligies in the trade. DPS was well represented with State Fire Marshal Doug Hinkle on hand for some opening comments, and Digital PIO Kristi Frohreich and OEM's Allan Miller teaching a class on how firefighters can provide important information to the news media in a calm and comfortable manner.

There's a wide variety of weather events in store for SD today. We have a Heat Advisory in southeast SD from 1PM-9PM with indices expected to reach 105̊ F. Thunderstorms are expected this afternoon across western SD and strengthen as they move east into central and northeast SD through the evening. The primary threats include tornadoes, possibly as strong as EF2, damaging wind gusts exceeding 75 mph, and large hail over 2”. NWS is indicating the highest threat for a tornado is along the SD/ND border, but strong winds have the possibility to impact a large portion of SD. The greatest risk area remains central and northeast South Dakota.

HARDING COUNTY TORNADO WARNING: The National Weather Service in Rapid City has issued a Tornado Warning for northwestern Harding County in northwestern South Dakota until 615 PM MDT.

At 530 PM MDT, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located 6 miles northwest of Ladner, or 26 miles northwest of Buffalo, moving east at 35 mph.

Conditions could produce a tornado and tennis ball size hail.

IMPACT...Flying debris will be dangerous to those caught without shelter. Mobile homes will be damaged or destroyed.
Damage to roofs, windows, and vehicles will occur. Tree damage is likely. Seek appropriate shelter and monitor your local news and weather stations.
