Today 7 members of our High Angle Rescue Team, conducted inspections of the rope rescue equipment on both 13-Rescue and 13-99.

Members conduct this inspection regularly to insure that all of the rope rescue equipment is clean and in working order for any emergency. All inspections that are completed by the team members get logged into the inspection book and get signed off by one of the 3 High Angle officers before it’s filed by the Chiefs Office.

Incident: High Angle Rescue
Date: 9/29/24
Time: 13:15hrs
Location: Long Trail (Peanut Falls)

On the above date and time the Piermont Fire Department was requested mutual aid to the Sparkill-Palisades Fire District for a male down in the State Park off the Long Trail.

13-1, 13-2, 13-3, 13-Marine, 13-Marine 2 & 13-H.A.R.T. responded with a total of 14 members to the scene via the Hudson River. Once on scene members made their way into the woods from the river trail and determined that the patient was approximately 300ft up the mountain side from the waters edge. At that time it was determined that additional manpower and equipment was going to be needed at the scene. 13-Command then requested the Nyack and Tarrytown Fire Departments Rope Rescue Teams be deployed to the seen via their marine units as well for assistance.

By the time the other teams arrived on scene, 13-H.A.R.T. had already made their way up the mountain side to the patient location and started setting up for a descent. During that time with the help of SOAC-3 and our EMTs, the patient was packaged into the stokes basket in preparation for their descent. Members of both Nyack and Tarrytown set up multiple anchor points with change of direction due to the wet & treacherous terrain. After approximately 3 hours of operating, the patient was removed off the mountain side and en-route to an awaiting ambulance at Pier 701.

Due to the critical condition of the patient. They were transported ALS to WCMC via South Orangetown Ambulance and Medic-21 for treatment.

Last evening members of the Piermont Fire Department High Angle Rescue Team, along with probationary members and EMTs participated in a roof rescue drill at the Village of Piermont DPW.

Members went over how to properly package a patient within a stokes basket, while also preparing for a pick. H.A.R.T. Members utilized two different retrieval techniques, one being a 24ft extension ladder and the second being the stick of 13-99.

Incident: Assist NYS Park Police
Date: 6/8/24
Time: 13:23hrs
Location: Peanut Falls, NY/NJ line.

On the above date and time the Piermont Fire Department was requested mutual aid to assist the NYS Park Police with a sick hiker in the area of Peanut Falls.

13-Marine along with 9 members of our High Angle Rescue Team responded to the scene. Upon arrival a diver was deployed to help 13-Marine gain access to the shoreline by checking for underwater obstruction. Once near the shoreline, members exited 13-Marine to make contact with the patient and Police. The patient was found to be extremely weak, dehydrated, and unable to keep liquids down. Emts quickly removed the patient onto the awaiting Marine Unit and out of the outside elements. The patient was transported and transferred to SOAC/Medic 21 at TZ-Marina for further evaluation.

Time: 16:07hrs
Incident: Injured Hiker
Location: NY/NJ Lookout (Rock Slide)

On the above date and time the Piermont Fire Department was requested mutual aid to Alpine, N.J. for a injured hiker.

13-H.A.R.T. & 13-Marine 2, responded with 8 rope rescue technicians and two EMT-B to the coordinates given by the NJ-PIP Police.
Once on scene operations contacted 13-Command requesting additional resources due to the difficult terrain and the location of the patient. 10-H.A.R.T. & 10-Marine we’re requested to the scene to assist with the removal of the patient who was approximately 250ft up the rock slide.
Once both teams secured an anchor point and packaged the patient, it took rescuers about 1.5 hours to remove the patient off the mountain to Tarrytown Fireboat 5 for transport.
