This week, we joined Pilipino Workers Center, Ysabel Jurado, descendants of farmworker leaders, students, elected officials, and community advocates to mark the 61st anniversary of the Delano Grape Strike and recognize the Filipino workers who launched it.

Our office is proud to help lead the effort to rename our public spaces so they reflect the full history of the farmworker movement, including the women and Filipino organizers who have been denied their rightful recognition. Thank you to everyone who joined us to honor their legacy and recommit to the cross-racial, working-class solidarity that made victory possible.

Isang Bagsak! ✊🏽

Clean Team Spotlight: Meet John Villegas from ! 🌟

John helps care for MacArthur Park as a member of one of CD1’s Clean Teams, and he loves serving a community that deserves to feel clean, welcoming, and cared for.

CD1 has more Clean Teams than any other council district, creating pathways to stable employment for Angelenos who have too often been denied a second chance. Here in our district, we believe keeping our neighborhoods clean and investing in the people who do that work are both part of building real community safety.

MacArthur Park’s progress doesn’t belong to any single moment. It belongs to workers like John and the community members who have been showing up and putting in the work for the last 3 and a half years. Thank you, John! ✊🏽

This , we’re rolling the tapes back to Música y Poemas over the years. 🎶🎤💛

We created Música y Poemas to make space for our community to gather, experience joy and cultura, enjoy live music and poetry, and connect with resources right in the heart of Highland Park. Over the years, we’ve grown the footprint and brought even more local partners, businesses, artists, and neighbors into the celebration.

And now, we’re ready to run it back! 🔥 Join us Saturday, October 10 from 2–7 PM on Figueroa Street between Avenues 55 and 58 for another Música y Poemas.

Special shoutout to Channel 35 for coming back year after year to capture the festivities and helping keep Angelenos connected to what’s happening in their city. We appreciate all you do! 🎥

Over the weekend, we joined neighbors at Alpine Recreation Center for the 3rd Annual LA Chinatown Hungry Ghost Festival, celebrating a tradition rooted in honoring ancestors and community through culture, ritual, and performance.

We’re proud to see our public spaces continue to be places where culture is celebrated, traditions are passed down, and community comes together. Thank you to the organizers, performers, volunteers, and everyone who made this year’s celebration possible! ❤️

This month, we worked with Casa Milagrosa for our latest Neighborhood Support Day, bringing healthcare, DMV and identification services, showers, laundry, haircuts, clothing, hygiene supplies, and connections to longer-term support directly to our unhoused neighbors.

A shower, clean clothes, an ID, or access to healthcare can remove a barrier standing between someone and their next step. By bringing these services together in one place, we can make it easier for people to get what they need while ensuring they’re met with care and dignity.

Thank you to Casa Milagrosa and every provider who continues to show up for our unhoused neighbors. 💛

September is National Preparedness Month, a reminder that preparing for an emergency means having the infrastructure and resources our neighborhoods need while also making sure residents have the tools and training to know what to do when disaster strikes.

Recently, we joined in Mount Washington as they worked on developing a series of evacuation workshops to teach the public about evacuation preparedness and resilience. For hillside communities like Mount Washington, where the risk of wildfire is higher, that preparation is especially critical.

That’s why we invested $75,000 in to support the development of a disaster resiliency plan and disaster preparedness trainings across Council District 1. Through hands-on education and training, is helping residents understand evacuation procedures, make a plan for their households, and build the skills needed to respond in an emergency.

For more information about upcoming trainings and preparedness resources, visit mysafela.org.

Over the weekend, we joined residents at the Angelina Apartments for a community clean-up, picking up litter and helping care for the neighborhood together.

Shoutout to the Angelina Apartments Organizing Committee for bringing their neighbors together, and to our LA Conservation Corps Clean Team for being out with us to provide additional support, including bulky item pickup.

Our Clean Teams are out across CD1 every week, but keeping our neighborhoods clean is also stronger when residents have the tools and resources to organize their blocks and work alongside us. Thank you to everyone who rolled up their sleeves and came out! 💪🏽
