The Pickerington Police Department hopes everyone has a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day weekend, which marks the beginning of summer.

More importantly, we need to remember what this holiday weekend is all about. Honoring all of our service men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in order to protect our great nation.

It has been estimated that some 1.3 MILLION American service members have died during all of the wars that the United States has been involved in, from the Revolutionary War to the current military operations in the Persian Gulf. These brave men and women died keeping America safe. They paid the ultimate price for our freedom. Let us not forget their sacrifices.

“Have you ever stopped to ponder the amount of blood spilled, the volume of tears shed, the degree of pain and anguish endured, the number of noble men and women lost in battle so that we as individuals might have a say in governing our country? Honor the lives sacrificed for your freedoms.“ - Author Unknown

“We must dare to be great; and we must realize that greatness is the fruit of toil and sacrifice and high courage.” - Theodore Roosevelt

“Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed, by so many, to so few.” - Winston Churchill

Did you know this week is national EMS week?

Each year, the third week of May is recognized as EMS Week — a time to honor the dedication, compassion, and professionalism of Emergency Medical Services providers across the country.

EMS is a vital part of what the Violet Fire and EMS Department does every single day. In 2025 alone, 8,201 of our 9,460 calls for service were EMS-related incidents, highlighting the critical role our personnel play in protecting the health and safety of our community.

At Violet Fire and EMS, every employee is required to hold a State of Ohio Paramedic certification in addition to their Fire Training, demonstrating the high level of training and commitment our team brings to every call.

Thank you to all of our Violet Fire and EMS personnel for the care, professionalism, and compassion you provide to our community. Happy EMS Week!

As National Police Week begins, the officers and staff of the Pickerington Police Department wish to pay their highest honors to those law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15th as National Peace Officers Memorial Day, and the calendar week in which May 15th falls, as National Police Week. National Police Week pays special recognition to those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.

The job of a law enforcement officer has never been safe or easy, but there has always been those who are willing to place themselves in harm’s way and stand between the criminals and the public they protect. Unfortunately, there have been many, many losses along the way.

Did you know there are almost 27,000 known law enforcement officer line of duty deaths (LODD) in the United States since 1776? 937 of those deaths occurred in Ohio since we became the 17th state in the union in 1803.

So far this year, our nation has lost 38 law enforcement members killed in the line of duty.

In 2025, our nation lost 111 officers who were killed in the line of duty. In 2025, the State of Ohio lost the following officers:
*Hamilton County Deputy Larry Henderson EOW: May 2, 2025
*Morrow County Deputy Daniel Sherrer EOW: May 26, 2025
*Lorain Police Officer Phillip Wagner EOW: July 24, 2025
*Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper Nicholas Cayton EOW: October 16, 2025

Rest easy brothers and sisters. We have the watch from here.
