๐Ÿšจ IMPORTANT CHANGES TO MISSISSIPPI JUVENILE LAWS ๐Ÿšจ

Beginning July 1, 2026, Mississippi Senate Bill 2710 (SB2710) will make significant changes to how certain offenses committed by juveniles are handled in the criminal justice system.

Under this new law, juveniles charged with serious offenses may no longer begin their cases in youth court. Instead, those cases may fall under the original jurisdiction of circuit court, exposing juveniles to the adult criminal justice system and significantly more severe penalties.

The law specifically impacts juveniles that attempt to commit or commit crimes of violence as defined by MS Code 97-3-2 while in possession of a firearm such as:

๐Ÿ”น Murder
๐Ÿ”น Aggravated Assault
๐Ÿ”น Manslaughter
๐Ÿ”น Kidnapping
๐Ÿ”น Robbery
๐Ÿ”น Drive By Shooting
๐Ÿ”น Shooting Into a Dwelling

This can result in:
โ€ข Adult felony charges
โ€ข Lengthy prison sentences
โ€ข Permanent criminal records
โ€ข Long-term impacts on employment, education, and future opportunities

The Picayune Police Department encourages parents and guardians to speak openly with young people about peer influence, social media conflicts, gang involvement, and the serious legal consequences associated with criminal activity.

Our department remains committed to protecting our community through education, prevention, and enforcement.

๐Ÿšฆ NEW SAFETY LIGHTS ON CANAL STREET
Keeping our community safe is a top priority for City Hall. We have recently installed new flashing lights on Canal Street near Marilyn's Xtreme Cheer, Leisha's Dance Studio, and Picayune TaeKwonDo to help protect our local children.

Please be aware that a 15mph speed limit is in effect in this area from 2:00 PM to 11:00 PM.

These lights were added to ensure that drivers are extra cautious while our "littles" are getting out of vehicles and crossing the street for their activities. With dance recitals and spring events right around the corner, our sidewalks and crosswalks will be even busier than usual with kids preparing for their big performances.

Thank you for slowing down and helping us keep our children safe!
