On Labor Day, we celebrate the hard-working Phoenix residents who make our city stronger every day. We honor the labor unions that fought for safer working conditions, a 40-hour workweek, and the rights working people rely on today.

In Phoenix, we know how important it is to protect our water. It was great to welcome Mina Guli to Phoenix this week as she continues her 2,000-mile run along the Colorado River, raising awareness about the need to keep this vital river running and healthy. It will take action from all of us, at every level and in every community in the basin, to protect our water future.

Visit Phoenix.gov/savewater to take part in our culture of conservation.

Sad to learn of the passing of Sgt. James Lukash. Our city is thankful for his 22 years of dedicated service protecting the people of Phoenix. My thoughts are with his loved ones and colleagues at the Phoenix Police Department during this difficult time.

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of Sergeant James Lukash #8125, who passed away at the hospital following a medical event at home. Sgt. Lukash was a 22-year veteran of the department and was assigned to the Violent Crimes Bureau.

Rest in peace, Sgt. Lukash, you will be dearly missed.

Today, the City of Phoenix was honored to receive the designation of a Certified Autism Center by IBCCES, meaning a majority of our public-facing staff are trained to better serve residents with autism, sensory sensitivities, and cognitive differences. Our city is the largest municipality in the nation to earn this designation.

We want to do the best job we can for all Phoenix residents.

This national recognition is well-deserved and a proud moment for Arizona. Panch has helped shape America’s innovation agenda, and I’m thrilled that his next chapter includes helping Phoenix shape what comes next with quantum technology. This focus will advance our economy, national security, and the jobs of the future. There is no one I trust more to help turn that promise into success.

Congratulations to my friend Panch on this historic honor.

As the 15th director of the National Science Foundation, Sethuraman Panchanathan’s term spanned Covid-19 and the race for a vaccine, and included the creation of the first new directorate in more than 30 years.

For 140 years, has answered the call. What began as a volunteer fire station in 1886 has grown into a nationally and internationally recognized fire service, with generations of firefighters dedicated to protecting our community. I was honored to join Chief Duran and city leaders to celebrate this incredible milestone and recognize the work they do every day.

Deeply saddened and horrified by the murders of Vincent Anthony Siqueiros and Cameron Davis Capara in what appears to be an attack on the LGBTQ community. My heart breaks for their families and loved ones.

No one should fear violence because of who they are or who they love. It is on all of us to stand together and make it clear that hate has no place in our state.

This week, we welcomed another neighbor in Headquarter Alley: Sprouts Farmers Market. I got to check it out last month while it was still under construction, so it was great to come back and see it now. Investments like this bring more jobs and opportunities to North Phoenix.

The City Council and I voted to throw our hat in the ring in a bid to host the Rugby World Cup in fall 2031. We’ve shown that we can host major sporting events and deliver an incredible experience for fans here in Championship Valley. Bringing the Rugby World Cup to Phoenix would give us another opportunity to welcome visitors from around the world and showcase the local businesses and attractions that make our city great. Phoenix leaders are backing a bid to bring the 2031 Men's Rugby World Cup to State Farm Stadium in Glendale.
