A WIN FOR OUR FALLEN AND THEIR FAMILIES

At the IAFF 58th Convention in Arlington, Texas, delegates faced a critical issue regarding how we honor our fallen Brothers and Sisters. A strict enforcement of IAFF policy threatened to exclude retired members who later died from occupational illnesses, including presumptive cancers, from the Fallen Firefighter Memorial Wall in Colorado Springs because they lacked Active Retiree status.

Because Local 493 bylaws lacked a mechanism for this, two of our own fallen Glendale firefighters, along with families across the United States and Canada, were in jeopardy of being left off the sacred wall due to an administrative technicality.

To fix this, Resolution 42 was introduced to the delegates. Glendale Chapter President Arick O’Hara took to the convention floor and spoke passionately in support of the resolution, detailing the heavy impact this policy change would have on our Glendale families.

His message was undeniable: Occupational cancer does not care if you are active or retired, and the Memorial Wall should never be gatekept by a membership status. An exposure that occurred while protecting our communities does not become less real after retirement.

The voices of Local 493 and our union brothers and sisters were heard, and Resolution 42 officially passed. The IAFF will now permanently honor all members whose deaths are attributable to line of duty exposures, regardless of their active or retired dues status.

Local 493 leadership is front and center at the 58th Biannual IAFF Convention in Arlington, TX. Today, L493 President Brian Willingham took the floor and the Jumbotron to advocate for our members.

The policies voted on in these rooms dictate international union rules, future labor rights, and safety standards back home. We are present and active every day to ensure the interests of valley firefighters are aggressively represented.

Local 493 leadership is in Arlington, Texas for the 58th Biannual IAFF Convention, representing nearly 3,000 Phoenix-area firefighters and ensuring the Valley has a strong seat at the table.

We are working alongside union leaders from across the U.S. and Canada to tackle the critical issues that impact our members both on the job and at home:

Protecting collective bargaining and local governance.

Fighting occupational cancer and removing toxic PFAS chemicals from our gear.

Advocating for safe staffing and essential federal funding.

Expanding behavioral health resources for our crews and families.

What happens nationally eventually makes its way home to the Valley. We are here to help shape the future of our profession, we are All-in.

Legendary Disney animator Glen Keane (The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Tarzan) grew up hiking Mummy Mountain. A few weeks ago, a family hike turned into an emergency that required a rescue.

Technical rescue teams comprised of IAFF Local 493 members sprang into action, working alongside aviation units to safely hoist Glen off the mountain.

Today, Glen returned to the station to reunite with his rescuers and present them with a custom piece of art capturing that day. We thank Glen for coming back to show his gratitude with this amazing art piece.

If passed, this measure would permanently alter the Arizona Constitution, creating dangerous consequences for our communities by stripping away local control over critical firefighter staffing, training, recruitment, retention, and working conditions.

These vital decisions belong in the hands of our local communities, fire chiefs, and the dedicated firefighters who keep you safe every day: not state politicians.

Arizona Task Force-1 is officially activated.

Today, a 48-member team—proudly made up of our own Local 493 members—rolled out of Phoenix heading toward the San Antonio, Texas area.

Equipped with boats and top-tier search and rescue capabilities, our crews are being pre-positioned by FEMA ahead of major storms and potential catastrophic flooding. This ensures they are ready to hit the ground running to support rescue operations if the worst happens.

We will keep the community updated on their progress as conditions on the ground develop. Please keep these dedicated men and women in your thoughts as they head out to help those in need.
