VFW Auxiliary 5540

VFW Auxiliary 5540 We support and assist veterans and their families. We are one of the top ten providers of volunteer hours in the VA medical system.

The VFW Auxiliary is one of the nation’s oldest veterans’ service organizations and our members are the relatives of those who have served in overseas combat. We have 475,000 members representing all 50 states, the District of Columbia and several foreign-based Auxiliaries who volunteer millions of hours and give millions of dollars to support veterans, military service personnel, and their famili

es. We are a voice for veterans on Capitol Hill and are instrumental in assisting the VFW pass or block legislation that impacts veterans and their families. Every year, members fund-raise millions of dollars for charitable projects that benefit veterans and their families. We also provide hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships for our nation’s youth. With more than 4,000 Auxiliaries, there is likely one in your area working to improve the lives of America’s uncommon heroes.

Today is Armed Forces Day.

This holiday is recognized annually on the third Saturday in May. Established in 1949, Armed Forces Day is meant to be a celebration of all military branches (Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, National Guard, Navy and Space Force). It differs from Veterans Day in that it’s a day to honor those who are currently serving, and unlike Memorial Day the focus is on the living, not those lost. Each year, the White House releases an official proclamation of the day. In 2024, President Biden’s address read in part, “I call upon all Americans to display the flag of the United States at their homes and businesses on Armed Forces Day, and I urge citizens to learn more about military service by attending and participating in the local observances of the day.” (To read President Trump's proclamation, go to WhiteHouse.gov - it was not yet available as of the scheduling of this post.)

How are you recognizing and celebrating our Armed Forces today? Are you flying the American Flag, participating in a VFW Day of Service activity, co-hosting an event at your Post home, educating fellow citizens with a “Buddy”® Poppy display and distribution or visiting a military base with fellow Auxiliary members? Let us know! Send photos and details to [email protected] with the subject line Armed Forces Day.

We wish a happy Armed Services Day to all who serve! Thank you for your service and sacrifice.

This week's is all about the money! We recently found a price listing in a 112-yr-old issue of VFW Auxiliary Messenger that listed everything a member could purchase with prices.

It took a while but we converted these costs into modern amounts and created this graphic to compare many of today's prices with those from yesteryear. (We went with costs as of Dec. 2025-Jan. 2026 as the original list is from Dec. 1923-Jan. 1924.) We no longer offer some of the products, while some now exist as free downloads (ex: emblem & letterhead). We were not sure if the semi-annual per CAPITAL tax was meant to read "Per Capita," but we could not verify whether it was a typo.

Many of the items for sale today come directly from the VFW Store, so we went with the prices most recently on their website for these items, but some may no longer be in stock or may need to be special ordered.

We can see some areas in which we've cut costs over the past century, like when it comes to the Charter fee. Had the rate kept up with inflation, that $10 in 1923 would equal nearly $200 today, but as of January 2026 it only set Auxiliaries back by about half that! Gavels cost more now, but the price is for those that are engraved. There is no longer a reason to sell ballot boxes with white & black balls, as we no longer vote that way, but if you'd ever like to see one of the old ones, we welcome you to visit the VFW Auxiliary National HQ Museum. Past Presidents' pins have gone down in price when adjusted for inflation - a savings of more than $60! And while you can purchase a metal membership card if you so choose, other options include a paper one and the digital version, which is free when using the MALTA app.

Are there any items on this list we no longer offer that you wish would make a comeback? And what do you think they meant by a cost for "honorable discharges?" Would you want to purchase a 14k pin for nearly $300? And how many bar pins with emblem are included when one would order "a few?"

(Please note: this is meant to be for fun, not a VFW Store price guide - for items available now at the VFW Store, please look to their website for the most up-to-date info.)

Due to the weather, we will be moving tonight's Flags at the Cemeteries event.
Instead, we will move this to Saturday, May 16th, @ noon.
If you are able, please meet us at the Post at noon, and we will carpool over to the 2 cemeteries to divide and conquer.

Additionally, on the same Saturday, we are having our Clam Shed Clean Out @ 10am.

This is where volunteers help to clean up after a long, hard winter to prepare for the field days and any other summer events.
We will be cleaning and transferring items of use from the upstairs kitchen to the shed (using wagons and the elevator).

Please remember that both events are for anyone who can help out. These are NOT exclusive to members.

We hope to see you there so that we can get it done quickly, efficiently, and without incident. As a team we can do more.
