TODAY! Come find out what was happening in Shandaken and Eastern Catskills in 1776 !
Fort Shandaken and the Revolution in the Southeastern Catskills
Saturday, 6/13, 11:00 am at Phoenicia Library.

This one-hour presentation by Eddie Moran, Ulster County Historian, explores the role of Fort Shandaken during the American Revolution and places it within the broader military and social landscape of the southeastern Catskills.

Built to help defend Kingston and Ulster County against attacks from the northwest, the fort was garrisoned by local militia members serving on what was then a frontier between Patriot-aligned Ulster and British-allied Native communities in the Catskills and the Delaware River watershed. The talk also examines how the Revolution was experienced differently by the region’s diverse inhabitants—including European colonists, Native people, and free and enslaved Africans—who were forced to choose sides for their own complex and often deeply personal reasons.

About Eddie Moran:

Eddie Moran currently is the appointed Historian for Ulster County, NY. Eddie graduated with a B.A. in history from SUNY New Paltz and began work as a guide and historical interpreter at Historic Huguenot Street in New Paltz. He is a lifelong resident of the Wallkill River Valley, and a descendant of the region’s Huguenot and Dutch colonizers.

Forty-three residents came out Saturday at the library to express themselves about the May 22 draft of the new comprehensive plan. There were concerns, questions, appreciation for aspects and an overall positivity. Thank you all who came. Earlier in the day similar sized groups met at the Pine Hill Community Center and Town Hall. People care!
