The goal of this organization is to create a space on Penn’s campus in which students can engage in dialogues relating to criminal justice. This group will encourage discussions outside of a classroom setting, and additionally focus on topics relating to current events. By framing the organization’s agenda around political action that can be taken on the local level, it is our hope to generate a g
roup that will have a continual presence in criminal justice reform in Philadelphia. Through following local political campaigns, such as the District Attorney’s race, and connecting with local organizations, we will create a platform that analyzes and evaluates issues at the forefront of criminal justice. By highlighting the intersections relating to criminal justice, such as race, gender, and socioeconomic status, we will demonstrate how expansive and biased the criminal justice system is in United States. Furthermore, we will collaborate with other student groups to expand outreach and promote criminal justice reform. Finally, we will support speakers to lecture during meeting regarding issues relating to criminal justice. In addition to promoting criminal justice reform through political means, this group will also oversee service opportunities that will directly impact individuals currently involved in the carceral system. Students will have the opportunity to volunteer at Graterford Prison, where they will help the male inmates write commutation letters. While this service aspect is not at the forefront of the organization’s agenda, it is our hope to facilitate many different avenues for participation in criminal justice reform.
