On March 24, 2026, members of the Pennsylvania General Assembly announced the creation of an 8-person Human Trafficking caucus to focus on passing human trafficking legislation.

The Pennsylvania Anti Human Trafficking Advocacy Work Group (PAHTAWG) drafted a letter to this caucus calling for survivors to be included in any and all legislative efforts to combat human trafficking. They will be hosting an advocacy day at the Capitol Building in Harrisburg on June 2, beginning with a press conference in the East Wing Rotunda at 10. PAHTAWG is calling for any survivors to not only attend, but to add their signature to this letter. Signees can remain anonymous.

If you would like to read the letter, email [email protected].
If you would like to sign the letter, visit PATrafficking.org.

Today is the last day for signatures.

Thank you to the and Barristers President Samantha Fitzpatrick for allowing us to share more about our work at Child Advocates and how members can get involved. On Thursday, May 21, Director of Intake and Pro Bono Beth Perez, Board of Directors Vice President Olakunle Ekundare, and Volunteer Attorney Leah George presented at the General Body Meeting about the background of the systems our clients are involved in, how a case gets to Child Advocates, how to volunteer for a case with us, and the support our volunteers receive when they take a case.

If you are interested in taking a case, please reach out to Beth at [email protected].

May is Mental Health Awareness month, so we are shining a spotlight on two of our social workers who support our clients’ mental health in their special roles at Child Advocates.

Maria Blaszczyk, LSW has recently stepped into the role of Outcomes in Behavioral Health Clinical Coordinator. In addition to her own caseload, Maria provides support and consultation to our attorneys and social workers working on cases where children have complex medical needs.

Marcía Hopkins, MSW is the Program Manager of Project PROTECT, in that role she provides team legal representation and social services to youth who have experienced human trafficking and facilitates the Youth Survivor Advisory Board; a board of young people who provide policy recommendations and trainings on human trafficking in the community.

In addition to their direct support of clients, both Maria and Marcía provide trainings about youth mental health. This week, Maria and Marcía trained one of our many community partners at (John J. Peters Institute) on the mental health impact of child welfare involvement and how to support system-involved youth. JJPI is a leading mental health provider for survivors of trauma and individuals with a history of sexual or relational violence in Philadelphia. Training partnerships with therapeutic providers extend the reach of Child Advocates beyond the youth we represent to improve mental health service delivery across our region.

We’re kicking off our Program Spotlight Series by highlighting SCCA’s Project for Children with Complex Medical Needs.

This program supports children and youth who are living with complex medical needs and involved in the child welfare system. Our staff works to ensure these children receive the care, advocacy, and services they need to support overall well-being.

Stay tuned as we continue sharing more about SCCA’s specialized programs throughout this series. 💚

Wednesday was our Kids at Court Conference at University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School. It was an interactive learning experience with Child Advocates’ community partners, volunteers, staff (past and present), and our newest colleague—Rosie an ambassador from Paws and Affection coming out to support the event.

Thank you again to University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School for hosting the event!

There’s still a chance to attend the Kids at Court Conference in Harrisburg on May 29th, which now offers 3.5 ethics credits! Register at 👉sccalaw.org/kids-at-court-conference.

Beth Perez, our Director of Intake and Pro Bono, recently attended the “Conquering Competency in Preparation for Making a Difference” panel presentation at the Pennsylvania Bar Association's Women in the Profession Annual Meeting in Pittsburgh.

Alongside fellow panelists and attendees, Beth participated in this interactive session focused on the nuances of providing pro bono representation through established volunteer programs. Participants heard from legal experts on high-impact services commonly offered through pro bono work, including wills preparation, protection from abuse orders, and other critical legal support services.

📱Your ethics requirement called, it wants you to register for this CLE📱

We couldn’t figure out the best meme to share the news, so here’s 4.

Exciting update: our upcoming Kids at Court: Access & Inclusion for Youth with Disabilities are now approved for 3.5 ethics credits!

While we all love a good meme, these credits exist because the content warrants them. Learning how to make courtrooms and legal practice genuinely accessible for young people with disabilities isn't just good legal practice; it’s an ethical obligation.

Come for the 3.5 ethics credits; leave with tools to make your practice more inclusive.
