For almost three decades we have worked to build food security throughout the Greater Philadelphia community, but today, we officially close our doors.

We are proud of the impact and progress we were able to make. Last year alone, we helped connect over 500,000 people with the food they needed to live healthy lives. And over the 28 years that the Coalition Against Hunger has been in existence, that impact has been far greater. Together, with your help and support, we were able to:

- Submit over 93,000 applications for SNAP benefits
- Provide and raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for other local food programs through various funding opportunities, as well as our annual Race Against Hunger
- Advocate at the city, state, and federal level to ensure the voices of our clients and our community were being heard
- Strengthen the local food network through our VIPN program and provide resources and support to help many of these volunteer run food programs better serve their community

It is with great sadness that our work at the Coalition Against Hunger is officially over, and as we grieve for our clients, our partners and our staff, we appreciate all the kind messages and stories that have been shared with us since the announcement our of closure. It has been an honor to serve our greater Philadelphia community for 28 years.

Our work to connect households with SNAP benefits, strengthen local food networks, and address the root causes of food insecurity comes at a significant cost, and over the past year we have struggled to secure the funding necessary for this crucial work.

We are so grateful for the support that we have received from our community, volunteers, donors, and funders. As we process the reality of our situation, we grieve especially for our clients, our partners, and our own team members.

Our Greater Philadelphia Coalition Against Hunger Advocacy team will be in DC on June 5 as part of the National Anti-Hunger Policy Conference. We will be talking to legislators about our priorities for the upcoming Farm Bill, the piece of legislation that includes SNAP, as well as letting legislators know what we are seeing in their districts. As community members, you all have an important perspective on food insecurity and the food safety net that our legislators need to hear.

Send us an email with what you want your legislators to know about food insecurity and feeding programs in your community by emailing our Director of Policy & Education, Katie Milholin, at [email protected] before June 5th. Thank you for your partnership!

Summer is just around the corner, and there is a new permanent federal child nutrition program designed to keep kids fed during the summer months when school is not in session: SUN Bucks (also called Summer EBT). For the summer of 2024, eligible children will receive $40 per summer month, $120 total. Many children will qualify for this benefit automatically, but some will need to apply directly for SUN Bucks.

To learn more about SUN Bucks, including who is eligible and what families can do now to ensure they get this benefit seamlessly, visit the SUN Bucks page on our website. www.hungercoalition.org/sun-bucks

Northwest Mutual Aid Collective has been providing food for their community ever since the pandemic began. What makes them different than many other free food programs? Northwest Mutual Aid Collective, Inc. delivers food straight to their clients each week with food packages that are based on the number of people in the household, health restrictions, cultural needs, and more.

During April, our team had frequent visits to classrooms around the Greater Philadelphia area! We ran 7 interactive food resource trainings for Penn Charter 6th and 10th graders, La Salle University Nursing Program students, and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia first year residents.

These trainings are designed to help participants gain a deeper understanding of the complexities of food insecurity and the impact it has on those living in the Greater Philadelphia region. They also include a facilitated discussion about the barriers and shortcomings of our current food system and safety nets, as well as the ways participants can take action to create a world where all people have the food they need to lead healthy lives.

April is ! At the Coalition Against Hunger, our team isn’t complete without our volunteers who generously dedicate their time to help us build food security throughout Philadelphia. We are so grateful for their commitment to our work and taking a stand against hunger.

One way people can volunteer with us is by answering calls on our SNAP Hotline. Last year, we were able to assist 19,000 callers with food resources, and help 4,750 people access SNAP benefits. As a small but mighty team, we could not do this work without the assistance of our volunteers!

We recently organized a Pantry Tour at Pinn Memorial Baptist Church for our Victory In Partnership Network members. Pinn Memorial showed us the wonderful space they use, which includes a very large kitchen that will soon be remodeled for their food distribution, and spoke about what they have learned throughout their time in operation. It was a great event that created even stronger connections between the anti-hunger community!

Congressman Glenn Thompson recently released information laying out his forthcoming Farm Bill proposal that would prohibit USDA from meaningfully updating the Thrifty Food Plan (TFP) to keep pace with the cost of a healthy diet. The TFP is the government food plan on which SNAP benefit amounts are based.

While this proposal would not lower current SNAP benefits, it would ensure that, in years to come, SNAP benefits would be unable to keep pace with the cost of a healthy diet. It is important that every hunger fighter understands that the ability to meaningfully update the Thrifty Food Plan at regular intervals must be maintained.

We encourage you to read more to learn more about how TFP updates support SNAP benefits and participants. https://hungercoalition.org/blog/advocacy-policy-updates-4.18.24
