The sentencing of activists who organized peaceful vigils to commemorate the Tiananmen crackdown is a triple tragedy. Not only is the punishment unjust for them and the victims of the crackdown, but it also denies generations of Hongkongers the space to discuss one of the most consequential events in modern Chinese history.

Lawyer Chow Hang-tung was sentenced to seven years and three months in prison, and fellow activist Lee Cheuk-yan was sentenced to seven years - despite them committing no internationally recognized crime. They must be immediately and unconditionally released.
