Juvenile Law Center

Juvenile Law Center Juvenile Law Center: first non-profit, nonpartisan public interest law firm for children in the US.

Juvenile Law Center plays a leadership role nationally and in Pennsylvania in shaping and using the law on behalf of children in the child welfare and justice systems to promote fairness, prevent harm, secure access to appropriate services, and ensure a smooth transition from adolescence to adulthood. Most of the youth on whose behalf we work are between 10 and 21 years of age and are among societ

y’s most vulnerable—most likely to be mislabeled, ignored, harmed, or scarred for life by systems that are supposed to help them.

This month, we join our colleagues working to abolish family policing in declaring June 2026 the second annual Stolen Children’s Month. Ashley Albert declared the first Stolen Children’s Month last year. Whether through juvenile placements, family policing and foster care, or ICE detention, families are regularly and brutally torn apart by state systems.

Panelists examine the developmental implications of GPS monitoring for youth as a less restrictive alternative to incarceration. Does it enhance safety and accountability? The discussion will include concerns around how the data is being used, privacy, trust, and long-term impacts on autonomy.

In an era where far too many states are moving backward when it comes to children and the legal system, it's nice to see a state taking a proactive step forward. Children should not be tried as adults, period. Congrats to the advocates, youth and families who fought hard for this win.

Under the newly signed Youth Charging Reform Act, children under age 16 will not be automatically charged in adult court, except in the most serious cases.

Time is stolen from people who are locked away. In this op ed, hear reflections on what time on the inside meant – and how, definitively, it was not “the best thing that happened’ to the author. We continue to fight for children who are incarcerated, clawing back whatever time we can for them.

A formerly incarcerated writer reflects on how the prison system didn’t foster change, but befriending time did.

Mandated reporting – legally requiring people families should be able to rely on for support, such as teachers, doctors, and social service providers to confidentially and anonymously report suspected child abuse, neglect, or maltreatment to authorities yields a disproportionate number of Black, Brown and Indigenous families entering the foster system.
