Field Goalz is a unique program designed to engage African American youth in the intersection of urban agriculture and basketball. This innovative camp blends physical fitness with environmental stewardship, offering hands-on gardening activities and basketball skills training. The camp fosters community, builds leadership skills, and promotes environmental awareness—while having fun both on the court and in the garden. Our mission is to break down stigmas surrounding agriculture, cultivate the next generation of Black farmers, and encourage sustainable living practices.
Program Objectives:
• Urban Agriculture Education: Youth will learn to grow food sustainably in urban environments, exploring the importance of local food systems and food justice.
• Basketball Skills Development: Participants will receive coaching to improve their basketball skills in a supportive, team-oriented environment.
• Environmental Stewardship: Youth will develop an understanding of environmental racism, climate justice, and how sustainable agriculture combats these issues.
• Civic Engagement: Campers will contribute to their community through gardening projects and food distribution efforts.
• Leadership and Teamwork: Through both basketball and gardening, participants will cultivate leadership skills and collaborate to achieve common goals.
Campers will engage in a variety of activities related to growing food, caring for the environment, and maintaining the garden space. The goal is to expose campers to various aspects of sustainable agriculture, environmental conservation, and community-building, so they gain a working knowledge of how food systems function, the importance of sustainable practices, and the impact of local environmental stewardship on broader climate justice issues.
