SEPTA Transit Police

SEPTA Transit Police The SEPTA Transit Police Department was created in 1981 by the Pennsylvania General Assembly. It is the 5th largest police department in Pennsylvania.

Since 1981, SEPTA's Transit Police Department has been working to provide riders with a safe and secure travel environment, while also protecting Authority property and personnel. With about 260 sworn personnel, the Transit Police are responsible for SEPTA's 2,200 square-mile service region, including over 100 stations on the Market-Frankford, Broad Street, and Regional Rail Lines. Officers comple

te their training at the Philadelphia Police Academy and are then assigned to one of seven patrols zones. Each zone has a headquarters, allowing officers to easily respond to emergencies while empowering officers to make decisions to address specific problems in their zones. The Transit Police force also includes many specialized units, such as the Community Affairs, Canine, Bicycle, and Special Operations Response Team (SORT) Units. These groups are staffed by specially selected and trained police officers to address specific concerns related to policing an urban transit system.
