It's no longer Friday, but we're still feeling good! Together with Philadelphia Department of Commerce we have launched the Commercial Corridor Tree Planting and Care Program, bringing trees to Philadelphia commercial districts. So far we have planted 117 trees on three commercial corridors. Want to see them for yourself? Head to 60th and Chestnut St, 55th and Chester Ave, and 5th and Lehigh to see the trees and don't forget to stop in a business while you're there.

Thank you to our pilot collaborators, ACHIEVEability, Global Thinking Initiatives Inc, nonprofit, ACANA, and Hace Main Street.

In one of Philly’s hottest neighborhoods, the influx of trees “gives people hope,” says one resident.

Philadelphia Parks and Recreation has open positions! Are you interested in working with street trees? Philadelphia Parks & Recreation is hiring Park/Water Project Technicians with a specialty in Arboriculture. These are the folks who come out to inspect when you put in a tree trimming, tree removal, or tree planting request. They assess your site and work with contractors to have the tree pruned or removed or a new tree planted. These are also the folks who respond when a street or park tree comes down in a storm and the people who make sure trees are included properly when a developer wants to build a new building.

To qualify for the job, you must have completed 60 credits at an accredited college, university, or technical school, with some of the classes being related to horticulture, arboriculture, landscape design, agronomy, environmental science, or a related field. You must also have two years experience working with trees. If you are already certified as an arborist under the International Society of Arboriculture, you only need to have attended college/technical school for two years. If you are not already certified as an arborist, you may apply for the position, but you must get certified by 9/30/2023 to be hired.

This is a civil service position that is salaried and includes many benefits including pension enrollment, medical, vision and dental insurance and more. When you apply for this position, you will be asked to sit for an exam on the subject matter the job covers. Once you complete the exam, all applicants will be ranked with top ranking applicants being offered jobs first. The opportunity to take the exam only comes up every few years, so if you are unsure if you would like this job now, but may want to be considered in the future, apply today!

The Philly Tree Plan is out! This Plan was years in the making with over 9000 Philadelphians contributing to its creation. The recommendations in the Philly Tree Plan call for a historic investment in our communities, using trees as a way to deliver community-sustaining jobs, health benefits, and connections to our cultures, pasts, and futures. Last night, we celebrated the Philly Tree Plan's release with many of our amazing partners who did and will continue to make this work a success.
