Society of Hospital Medicine

Society of Hospital Medicine Empowering hospitalists. Transforming patient care.

SHM is the only organization solely dedicated to hospital medicine, the fastest growing specialty in the history of medicine. It is our mission to promote the highest quality care for hospitalized patients, as well as provide opportunities and support to hospitalists. We are committed to enhancing the practice of hospital medicine by promoting education, research and advocacy. A hospitalist is a clinician whose primary professional focus is the general medical care of hospitalized patients. Hospitalists engage in clinical care, teaching, research and enhancing the performance of hospitals and healthcare system. Hospitalists are focused around a site of care (the hospital) rather than an organ (like cardiology), a disease (like oncology) or a patient’s age (like pediatrics). Unlike other medical specialties, hospitalists help manage patients through the continuum of hospital care, often seeing patients in the emergency room, following them into the critical care unit and organizing post-acute care.

“As a ‘triple threat’ specialty, hospital medicine exemplifies the future of healthcare: integrated, data-driven, and patient-centered.” 🏆📚💡

Learn more about the origins of the hospitalist model and how it has evolved:

Hospital medicine has evolved over three decades into a specialty embodying a “triple threat” identity as clinicians, educators, and researchers central to modern healthcare delivery.

Hospitalists get this question all the time: “After a drug eluting stent, when can we safely stop one of these antiplatelet agents?” 🩸
A new analysis of DAPT duration taking into account bleeding risk offers clearer guidance on how long patients truly benefit from staying on dual therapy versus when the risks start to outweigh the rewards.

Dr. O’Neil Pyke once imagined a future in ophthalmology, then cardiology, then GI. But the more he explored, the clearer it became he was driven by relationships, not procedures.
Everything changed in 1999 when he accepted a role as a hospitalist. “This was in 1999, and I hadn’t heard of a hospitalist,” he says.

That pivot turned out to be the perfect fit. He quickly saw how hospitalists were transforming care for hospitalized patients, and he knew he’d found his place.
