Dredging keeps waterways navigable. Wetland restoration protects coasts.

This U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) study shows how one project can help advance both goals.

Instead of disposing of dredged sediment elsewhere, researchers examined its beneficial use on a New Jersey marsh island threatened by sea-level rise. The sediment raised the marsh surface, supported vegetation recovery over time, and could provide nearly two decades, or more, of additional resilience under projected sea-level rise.

Last month, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Philadelphia District team members Keith Bromke and Charles Byard deployed to Saipan and Tinian in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands in support of the response to Super Typhoon Sinlaku.

Bromke and Byard supported debris-removal efforts to help communities recover following the storm in the western Pacific.

News Release: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Philadelphia District shared an update regarding upcoming dredging along the Lewes & Rehoboth Canal in Sussex County, Delaware.

USACE previously awarded a $9.6 million contract to Cottrel Contracting Corporation of Chesapeake, Va. to conduct dredging from the Route 9 Bridge south to the entrance of the Canal at Rehoboth Bay. The contract calls for dredging approximately 89,000 cubic yards of sediment from the Lewes & Rehoboth Canal.

Dredging is expected to begin in October 2026 and be completed by March 2027.

News Release: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Philadelphia District announced that it has awarded a $19.695 million contract to Agate Construction Co. of Egg Harbor Township, N.J. to repair multiple ocean outfall pipes along Absecon Island.

Work is part of the Absecon Island Coastal Storm Risk Management project and is cost-shared with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and the local municipalities.

The Army Corps will coordinate with Agate Construction Company on a schedule and share updates on its webpage.

News Release: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Philadelphia District announced portions of the Michael N. Castle Trail along the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal will be closed on weekdays from August 24th through September 4th. The trail closure is necessary for the Army Corps' contractor to complete maintenance work on Summit Bridge.

The path closure will be in the vicinity of Summit Bridge and will prevent continuous travel from Chesapeake City to Lums Pond trailheads.

News Release UPDATE - portions of the Michael N. Castle Trail along the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal will be temporarily closed from July 26 through August 7 and again briefly in late August to enable our contractor to finish land-based work related to dredging the Delaware River.
