Philadelphia Socialist Alternative

Philadelphia Socialist Alternative Maintained by the Philadelphia Branch of Socialist Alternative We fight for democratic socialism where ordinary people will have control over our daily lives.

Socialist Alternative is a nationwide organization fighting in our workplaces, communities, and campuses against the exploitation and injustices people face every day. We are community activists fighting against budget cuts in public services; we are union activists fighting for living wage jobs and militant, democratic unions; we are people of all colors speaking out against racism and attacks on

immigrants, students organizing against tuition hikes and war, people of all genders fighting sexism and homophobia. We believe the Republicans and Democrats are both parties of big business, and we are campaigning to build an independent, alternative party of workers and young people to fight for the interests of the millions, not the millionaires. We see the global capitalist system as the root cause of the economic crisis, poverty, discrimination, war, and environmental destruction. As capitalism moves deeper into crisis, a new generation of workers and youth must join together to take the top 500 corporations into public ownership under democratic control to end the ruling elites' global competition for profits and power. We believe the dictatorships that existed in the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe were perversions of what socialism is really about. Socialist Alternative is also in political solidarity with International Socialist Alternative https://worldsocialist.net a worldwide socialist organization with active groups in more than 35 countries, on every continent. It’s the day before May 1, International Workers Day and we still have time to talk to our coworkers, classmates and community members about joining us for a day of “No Work, No School, No Shopping”! Join us at the protest at City Hall at 4pm tomorrow alongside unions, workers, and organizations across the city.

We can remember that on January 23rd Minneapolis and Saint Paul rose up against Trump and ICE waging the first general strike in the US in 80 years. That stopped ICE from invading cities and temporarily put Trump on the back foot.

That is the power of the working class and if we can organize that power we will be unstoppable. May Day will be a nationwide movement with educators in particular taking a strong leading role in North Carolina, Chicago and Madison. This is just one step in the journey to reclaim not just our country but the whole world to be run by the people who actually make things happen, the workers!

04/29/2026

This Friday is May Day and these educators in Philadelphia say “No Work, No School, No Shopping” and “No War, No Trump, No ICE."

Trump’s imperialist blunder in Iran has killed at least 3,300 people, has tanked the global economy, and is costing $1 billion a DAY! That money could go far if put towards what working class people actually need: universal healthcare, free public transit, fully funded education through college and $25/hour minimum wage.

We stand in solidarity with workers across the country, like in Madison, Wisconsin where the school district was forced to cancel school on Friday because the teachers’ union called for sick-outs. We can win all this if we are organized enough, because workers hold the power to stop the profits of the billionaire class. Workers in Minneapolis and St. Paul showed their power on January 23, waging the first citywide political general strike in over 80 years.

Talk to your coworkers and classmates about striking and staging walkouts this May Day and pledge to go to the protest on Friday at 4pm at City Hall at bit.ly/WOBPledge!

TODAY! ALL OUT IN SOLIDARITY WITH MINNEAPOLIS!

Unions, immigrant rights groups, and community groups have called for
"No work, no school, and no shopping" in Minneapolis, and we're showing that Philly stands with workers fighting back against Trump and ICE. Trump's barbaric invasion of Minneapolis and other cities won't be stopped without a fight - but the working class shutting down profits has the power to win.

Minneapolis workers are showing the way, and we need to follow and prepare for a national one-day strike and more.

*DM us if your organization or union would like to cosponsor this event!*

Minneapolis is under brutal ICE occupation, which has resulted in the murder of Renee Good, the barbaric detention of over 1,000 immigrants, and terror across the entire city. In response, a coalition of unions and other organizations have issued a call for a one-day strike across Minnesota on Friday, January 23!

This is precisely the escalatory step we need if our movement hopes to score a decisive victory against Trump’s deportation machine. Join us in Philly to stand with Minneapolis and demand ICE OUT FOR GOOD!

Given the horrific murder of legal observer Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis this morning, we are cancelling our "Hand Off Venezuela" action and encouraging everyone to attend the Vigil at the NE corner of City Hall tomorrow 1/8.

Trump has spent years making xenophobic rants and ramping up ICE attacks to harass and kidnap our working-class immigrant neighbors. This murder is a culmination of the authoritarian deportations, pouring billions into funding for ICE. We need to ramp up the protests, including strike action and protests. We'll be out at the vigil tomorrow, because the drive towards imperialist war is very tied to the racist attacks on immigrants.

The fight against attacks in Venezuela are still an ongoing struggle, and there will be a national day of action this Saturday which we'll be building for, with details to come soon.

THIS ACTION HAS BEEN CANCELLED FOR THE NO ICE PROTEST AT 5PM AT CITY HALL ON THURSDAY. Come out to a national day of action against the attacks on Venezuela on Saturday, with more details to come!

NO TO TRUMP'S WAR OF REGIME CHANGE! We need mass protests against the attacks on Venezuela and plunder for big oil. Hundreds of Venezuelan fishermen have already been killed by US bombings, and the deadly bombings yesterday certainly killed many civilians. We have no faith in the pro-war Democrats or any other imperialism to fight for the working-class and oppressed internationally. We call for socialist struggle in Venezuela and mass protests internationally against the war for big oil and imperialist domination!

At the press conference yesterday, Trump repeated his racist dog whistles about this being a war against "narco terrorists", which is cover for the US interests in the massive amounts of oil in the region and cutting off Chinese imperialism's access to natural resources. That's why our fights aren't isolated—Trump's racist attacks on immigrants are also part of the divide and rule rhetoric that the billionaire class uses to justify its war for oil and their profiteering. We need a new party for working people that fights against all imperialist wars for plunder and all racist attacks. DM us if your organization wants to sign on!

As of Wednesday July 9th, DC 33 leadership has reached a Tentative Agreement with Mayor Parker, which includes only 3% raises per year, the preservation of the health plan, and the allowance of one additional instance of using “uncertified” sick time before being placed on the “Sick Abuse” list. Many members are angry that union leadership settled for so little and were prepared to keep fighting.

The rank and file have the power to ratify this contract, or to send the negotiating team back to the table to fight for more. The following article was written while the strike was on-going. Socialist Alternative supports a “No” vote on the Tentative Agreement to keep fighting, and escalating the struggle to win the contract that city workers deserve!

Solidarity with DC33: Strike Rally TONIGHT 5:30pm @ OEM Building, 240 Spring Garden St. hosted by Unity Caucus Philly

Municipal workers make this city run. But Cherelle Parker and the whole Philadelphia political establishment treat them like they’re disposable. DC33, DC47, all unions, and ALL working people must come together to support the fight for for 8% annual raises + COLA, maintaining premium-free union healthcare, no layoffs, and no “Big Brother” sick time policy for city workers!

The political establishment is trying to use union-busting injunctions to crush this strike, come out to show striking workers that we have their backs.

Yesterday our city-wide organization got together to discuss how the crises of capitalism have given rise to Trump and other right populist figures internationally, the state of the anti-Trump movement in the U.S., and how to build for the strongest possible May Day protests.

It’s becoming increasingly clear that the courts, Congress, and the Democratic Party cannot stop Trump’s right-wing, billionaire-backed agenda. Working-class power doesn’t come from the courts or through writing letters to our elected representatives. Working-class power comes from the billions in profits workers produce for billionaires like Trump. It comes from our power to stop the economy dead in its tracks until we get what we demand.

We think this May Day should be a launching pad to escalate the movement to a one day strike! For example, Kilmar Obrego García, the Maryland man wrongfully deported to El Salvador’s most brutal prison, is a member of SMART, a union representing 230,000 workers in construction and transportation. The union’s president has called for Garcia’s return. But if he went a step further and organized a one day strike of all SMART members and called on other building trades unions not to cross the picket line, Trump could be forced to concede. This would be a qualitative step forward for the movement, and would give workers and young people everywhere the confidence that it is possible to fight back and win!

We also think we need a new mass, working-class party that is rooted in social struggle and the labor movement to effectively fight Trump. Beyond that, we need to fight to bring an end to the rotten capitalist system that gives rise to figures like Trump and his divide-and-rule politics in the first place!

If you want to march with us and fight for the anti-Trump movement to take up these ideas, meet us at 3:45 pm on the north side of city hall on May 1st, or DM us if you get there late and want to join!

Message us if your union, organization, or student group would like to get involved in helping organize a powerful protest on May 1st!

This May Day needs to be a call to action for the entire labor movement to fight back against Trump's attacks! Attacks on Federal workers, anti-war activists like Mahmoud Khalil, immigrants and trans people are attacks on the entire working class. Unions, immigrant rights groups and social movements need to unite every front of the struggle against Trump and Musk to build the most powerful movement possible. Ultimately, the fight against Trump's attacks needs to be a fight against the capitalist system as a whole.

🚨 ALL OUT TO CITY HALL – MONDAY 3/17! 🚨
The Trump administration ordered the arrest and deportation of Palestinian student and activist Mahmoud Khalil as retribution for helping lead the anti-war student encampment at Columbia University last year in response to the genocidal war on Gaza. Khalil—a legal permanent resident who has now had his Green Card revoked—was taken from his home by Immigration and Customs Enforcement to a detention center in Louisiana.

The U.S. government is attempting to disappear a political activist for his views and for exercising his rights to free speech and demonstration. This is a serious and dangerous escalation of the already brutal repression against those who have dared to speak out against the Israeli state’s occupation and war, which is bankrolled by U.S. imperialism. This must be fought everywhere—in the streets, in our workplaces, and in our schools. Khalil will not be the last activist punished for his political views, and if left unchallenged the Trump administration will go even further.
