Students will amaze themselves as they learn basic moves and create their own choreography by exploring the American art form of breakdancing with Hip Hop Fundamentals. Created in the 1970s by New York’s youth, the dance form is an engaging and exciting way for young people to express themselves, have fun, exercise, build confidence, and work as a team. This workshop is designed to build self-confidence and reinforce the idea that you can do anything you put your mind to doing.

Celebrate the inspiring story of Emma Dupree, a renowned Black folk herbalist, and explore the roles of vinegar and rock sugar in traditional herbalism. This hands-on workshop includes sampling herbal vinegars and creating your own infused vinegar to take home. Presented by Yam Vallis. Yam is an AfroIndigeonous fifth-generation community herbalist and clinical herbalist. Raised by a small rocky creek on Piscataway lands (Washington DC), with ancestral ties to the Lenapehoking (West Philly) where they currently live, Yam comes from a lineage of healers and storytellers. In their art and work with herbs, they are committed to building and imagining a future that centers on food & medicine sovereignty, abolition, and deep ancestral healing. Yam believes that reclaiming our ancestral relationship with plants can empower and uplift individuals by radically changing their relationship with their bodies and the land around them.

Elite colleges are boasting unprecedented numbers with respect to diversity, with some schools admitting their first majority-minority classes. But when the twin pandemics of COVID-19 and racial unrest gripped the world, schools scrambled to figure out what to do with the diversity they so fervently recruited. And disadvantaged students suffered. Class Dismissed exposes how woefully unprepared colleges were to support these students and shares their stories of how they were left to weather the storm alone and unprotected.

Drawing on the firsthand experiences of students from all walks of life at elite colleges, Anthony Abraham Jack reveals the hidden and unequal worlds students navigated before and during the pandemic closures and upon their return to campus. He shows how COVID-19 exacerbated the very inequalities that universities ignored or failed to address long before campus closures. Jack examines how students dealt with the disruptions caused by the pandemic, how they navigated social unrest, and how they grappled with problems of race both on campus and off.
