Fort Mifflin has been part of the Colonial Garden Consortium along with Bartram's Gardens, Grumblethorpe, Pennsylvania Hospital, Powel House, The College of Physicians of Philadelphia, The Woodlands and the Wyck Historic House. Its September which means more than pumpkin spice everywhere!! Its officially Spooky Season Time at the Fort!!! Spooky Season is a month of Halloween events that is sure to have something for everyone. We have an open paranormal investigation scheduled on Oct 3rd. If you want more you can sleep with the ghosts at our annual overnight investigation (7pm to 6am) on Oct 24th. Our famous candle light ghost tours are back on Oct 9, 10, 16, 17, 22 and 23. Hear real ghost stories of the spirits that still call the fort their home. And don't forget you can trick or treat at the fort on Halloween.

September 3rd, 1777
The Battle of Cooch’s Bridge – The Philadelphia Campaign
This is the only battle to take place in Delaware and the first time the American Flag is flown during a battle. British General William Howe landed his 17000 troops in Maryland on August 25th and was on his way to capture Philadelphia which is the capital of the Rebels – the Continental Congress.
Continental General George Washington was camped near Wilmington Delaware and had small groups of troops at various roads and bridges to determine the British movements. Washington himself traveled to nearby hills to spy on the British troops. Brigadier General William Maxwell commanded about 1000 troops divided between Iron Hill and Cooch’s Bridge.
British and German troops under the command of Lieutenant General Charles Cornwallis advanced a company of Hessian dragoons along the road north of Aiken’s Tavern and were fired upon by Maxwell’s light infantry. This brought a rush of German jaegers to engage the militia. Maxwell held until a German bayonet charge forced them to retreat to Cooch’s Bridge where they made a heroic stand until they ran out of am******on. Another bayonet charge forced them to retreat to Washington’s camp at White Clay Creek. The Germans pursued for a few miles but turned back to shore up their gains.
General Cornwallis now occupied Cooch’s Bridge and Iron Hill while General Howe made his headquarters at Aiken’s Tavern before heading north to continue the campaign.

Have you seen the garden at Fort Mifflin? This garden is run by a non-profit called Blue Sky Gardens. Blue Sky Gardens is a 501c3 educational garden located in Philadelphia with a mission of providing nutrition and agricultural education. With an emphasis on community connection through our food and nutrition services, we are dedicated to supporting and preserving local food systems. The garden’s educational programs provide children’s groups, and people of all ages, in-depth experiences focused on local food and healthy eating. Spend the night if you dare! Actual sleep is optional during our annual overnight paranormal investigation, where you get to explore the buildings, myths and legends behind the Fort’s permanent residents. Sleeping quarters are dormitory style, or BYO tent.

Participants have access to heated and unheated buildings, including some areas not open to the general visiting public, plus outdoor areas. Share your evidence and learn about the history of the Fort with local paranormal investigation team G.Host Official around the fire pit.
