VALENTINE’S DAY SWEETHEART OF A HIKE WITH KRIS SOFFA, PHILA PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION

Meet at the front parking lot of 4900 Ridge Avenue, Wissahickon Transfer Center

The Wissahickon is for lovers. Here’s your invitation to put down that remote control and add “nature” to your Valentine’s Day celebration. Join Kris Soffa for this heart-healthy walk and learn fascinating facts about the lower Wissahickon Valley. See how far Cupid’s arrow can go as we hike the paved trail from the mouth of the Wissahickon Creek. We’ll pass below the “Lover’s Leap” rocky outcropping and arrive at Forbidden Drive at “Ten Box” ranger station. Dress in layers for “cold weather hiking.” Bring a snack and beverage. Fitness (or ski poles) and non-slip footwear are recommended.

Distance: 2.5 Miles

I’m really excited this week. Want to know why? We’re about to kick off the 2018 season of the Philadelphia Unity Cup!

We launched the Unity Cup back in 2016. This tournament, presented by Goya Foods, unites the city’s neighborhoods and celebrates our diverse immigrant communities through a shared love of soccer.

52 teams representing countries around the world compete in the tournament, which continues every weekend through August.

The regular season matches will be hosted at one of the following locations:

Ramp Playground (3300 Solly Ave).
Hunting Park (1101 West Hunting Park Ave).
Smith Playground (2100 S. 24th St).
Germantown Supersite (Sedgwick and Lowber Sts.).

The very first game will happen this Friday at Ramp Playground at 6:30pm when Colombia faces off against Haiti!

The initial games in August will be followed by quarter and semi-final matches. All of this leads up to the championship match at Talen Energy Stadium, home of the Philadelphia Union, on Saturday, October 13.

Make sure to mark your calendar! This championship game will feature a festival-style tailgate party outside the stadium and a parade of nations with all 52 teams before kickoff. It’s free and open to the public, so I hope to see you there!

Philadelphia Parks & Recreation Seeks Applicants for Lifeguard Jobs
Candidates encouraged to apply early

Philadelphia - Philadelphia Parks & Recreation (PPR) is recruiting lifeguards for the 2018 pool season. Interested candidates are encouraged to apply now for one of 400 lifeguard positions at 70 outdoor pools across Philadelphia. The starting salary for the PPR lifeguard position is $13.65 an hour. Candidates are strongly encouraged to begin the application process now in order to successfully meet the requirements for becoming a PPR lifeguard. Additionally, early applicants can take advantage of training from PPR Aquatics staff that will enhance their swimming techniques and aid them in the lifeguard screening process.

In order to obtain a position applicants must be 16 years or older, pass a lifeguard screening and then complete 21.5 hours of Lifeguard Training, First Aid, and CPR. Interested applicants can begin the application process by visiting one of our training site locations. Screenings are free and do not require an appointment.

Mastery Campus
Wayne & Chelten Avenue
Monday - Friday
4:30 - 8:30 PM

Lincoln Swimming Pool
Lincoln High School
Rowland & Shelmire Street
Monday - Thursday
