Today at the Philadelphia Industrial Correctional Center (PICC), PDP kicked off a month-long series of reentry-focused events with a Reentry Simulation designed to give incarcerated individuals a firsthand look at the challenges they may face upon release.

Participants navigated real-world obstacles such as securing housing, finding employment, obtaining identification documents, meeting supervision requirements, and accessing essential services—all while managing limited time, transportation, and resources. For many returning citizens, these challenges are encountered with little preparation, planning, or support, turning everyday tasks into barriers that can lead to frustration and setbacks.

The Reentry Simulation helps prepare soon-to-be-released individuals for that reality by providing a better understanding of the hurdles ahead and the resources available to help them succeed. Today's event is the first of four Reentry Month events that will be held each Tuesday throughout June at PDP institutions along State Road.

Every successful reentry strengthens families, improves public safety, and builds stronger communities.

Today, the Philadelphia Department of Prisons gathered at the Curran-Fromhold Correctional Facility to honor the memory of Warden Patrick N. Curran and Deputy Warden Robert F. Fromhold, who were murdered in the line of duty at Holmesburg Prison on May 31, 1973.

More than five decades later, we continue to remember two ordinary men who were extraordinary public servants. Their sacrifice brought national attention to the dangers faced by correctional professionals and serves as a lasting reminder that the work of protecting public safety often takes place behind prison walls, far from public view.

We were honored to be joined by members of the Curran and Fromhold families, whose commitment over the years has helped ensure that their loved ones' legacy endures.

Today, and every day, we remember Warden Curran and Deputy Warden Fromhold, and we honor all correctional professionals who serve with courage, dedication, and integrity.

Memorial Day message from Commissioner Resnick:

As we observe Memorial Day, each of us should take a moment to remember and honor the dedicated men and women who gave their lives in service to our country, and express our appreciation for the sacrifices made by members of the military to protect our freedom.

To those among us who have served or have loved ones who served – thank you.

Wishing you a safe and meaningful Memorial Day.

On May 21, 2026, The Citizens Crime Commission of the Delaware Valley honored members of the PDP’s Security and Intelligence Unit (SIU), the Philadelphia Police Department, and the Temple University Police Department with the Multi-Unit Award at the 45th Annual Law Enforcement Appreciation Day Luncheon.

The Multi-Unit Award recognized a coordinated operation between the three agencies that intercepted a major contraband-smuggling attempt, resulting in the recovery of multiple cell phones, narcotics, and thousands of dollars in cash. This swift and well-coordinated effort prevented dangerous contraband from entering the correctional system – reducing the risk of violence and overdoses within the city’s correctional facilities – while protecting public safety and the greater Philadelphia community.

🏆 Congratulations to all the award recipients!

ABOUT THE EVENT: The Law Enforcement Appreciation Day Luncheon was hosted by 6ABC anchor, Rick Williams, and was held at the historic Bellevue Hotel in Center City. The event was sponsored by the Citizens Crime Commission of the Delaware Valley, a nonprofit group based in Philadelphia that works with law enforcement and the courts to help solve crimes.

Their flagship program, the TIPLINE, is a phone line for callers to report crimes without giving their name. If a tip helps solve a crime, the person who gave it may be eligible for a cash reward. To share a tip, call 215-546-TIPS (8477).
