The toads are back in town!

We recently spotted toadlet in the Roxborough Reservoir. So this Wednesday, our Toad Detour volunteers came out for our first toadlet crossing of the season. Measuring between 0.25 and 0.5 inches, these tiny amphibians are the offspring of the American toads who laid their eggs in the reservoir earlier this spring. We counted hundreds of toadlets crossing the road this week.

Interested in helping the baby toads? Keep an eye on the Toad Detour page under "volunteer" on our website, where we announce crossings: https://schuylkillcenter.org/toaddetour/

Do you recognize this turtle?

On Saturday, the Wildlife Clinic at the Schuylkill Center admitted this beautiful Northern red-bellied cooter after she was left in the parking lot of ACCT Philly overnight Friday (5/22/26). Unfortunately, because the turtle was left without speaking to someone, nobody knows where this turtle came from.

Turtles are extremely sensitive to their environment and only travel within a mile radius their entire lives. Despite her broken shell, Patient 26-609 is expected to make a full recovery. It is essential that we find out where this turtle was found so that when she heals, she can be returned back home. It’s even more critical that she goes back to her territory because Northern red-bellied cooters are a threatened species in Pennsylvania and have very specific habitat needs.

If you have any information, please contact us! We want to ensure this turtle makes it back home safely. Please share this post to help us spread the word so we can reach the person who rescued this turtle so they can share where they were found. Any information can be emailed to [email protected] or shared by phone 215-853-6271. Serious inquiries only.

Our William Penn Charter School interns joined executive director Erin Mooney and Bird Safe Philly volunteers this morning, looking for birds that may have died or were injured after flying into Center City skyscraper windows. Each morning during spring and fall migration, Bird Safe Philly patrols Center City streets, looking for injured birds.

This spring, on warm and rainy nights, volunteers participating in our beloved Toad Detour program close sections of Port Royal Avenue to prevent road fatalities as toads cross the road between the Roxborough Reservoir and the forest. For 14 years community scientists have collected data by recording the quantity, species, and age of the amphibians they see. The Schuylkill Center is proud to train, organize, and maintain the data of these volunteers, inspiring our community with hands-on opportunities to care for wildlife.

Your donation helps us train, coordinate, and equip these volunteers, turning compassion into meaningful conservation.

The Schuylkill Center relies on the generosity of donors to conserve the largest privately owned wilderness within Philadelphia city limits.
