"The Supreme Court upheld the principle of birthright citizenship in a ruling for the ages on Tuesday, affirming amid rancorous national debate that people born in this country are American citizens...Reaction flooded in immediately, with Cathryn Miller-Wilson, executive director at HIAS Pennsylvania, the immigrant-support organization, saying the decision fell 'on the right side of history.'"

The decision handed a key loss to President Donald Trump, who had signed an order to end birthright citizenship for children born in the U.S. to undocumented immigrants.

As Immigrant Heritage Month comes to a close, we want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who attended one of HIAS Pennsylvania's events, made a donation, partnered with us, or helped spread the word. Each one of you made this month a meaningful celebration of immigrant communities and a powerful call for immigrant justice.

We kicked off the month with a benefit concert, Crescendo for Justice: Breaking the Silence for Immigrant Rights. Special thanks to the concert’s host, Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church and Jennifer Montone, Principal Horn for The Philadelphia Orchestra, conductor Lina Gonzalez-Granados, and all of the incredible musicians who performed the evening’s beautiful music.

Throughout the rest of June, we held three virtual events that brought our community together to learn, connect, and take action:
- On June 5th, ARSP Executive Director Jutta Weduwen joined our webinar to commemorate the MS St. Louis.
- On June 15th, Philadelphia City Council Minority Leader Kendra Brooks and Councilmember-at-Large Rue Landau provided attendees with a deep dive into Philly’s landmark “ICE Out” legislation.
- On June 22nd, HIAS PA Managing DOJ Accredited Representative Shaloo Jose shared the latest developments affecting refugees and asylees during our webinar in honor of World Refugee Day.

In recognition of World Refugee Day, join us tomorrow for a virtual program on the latest developments affecting refugees and asylees in the United States. Cathryn Miller-Wilson, Executive Director of HIAS PA, and Shaloo Jose, Managing DOJ Accredited Representative, will discuss barriers to permanent residence for refugees and asylees seeking to apply for Green Cards, and changes that could make it more difficult for refugees and asylees to obtain and maintain employment authorization. Attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions during the program.

Those Who Have Been Left Behind: Defending Refugee Rights in a Time of Exclusion will also cover the federal government’s efforts to subject refugees and asylees, who have already been vetted and granted protection in the United States, to additional security vetting and review, as well as the court challenges that have temporarily paused these efforts. The webinar will address the current administration’s recent decision to increase refugee admissions, while reserving those slots exclusively for white South Africans--who do not meet the legal definition of a refugee.

As we mark World Refugee Day, we invite advocates, community members, and our immigrant, refugee, and asylee neighbors to learn more about these developments and what they mean in the ongoing fight for justice.

This program is the final event in HIAS Pennsylvania’s Immigrant Heritage Month series.
