That large, iconically bright yellow ring-like structure you might have spotted heading up the Schuylkill River isn’t a mirage—it’s FloatLab, a one-of-a-kind floating public space and waterfront destination, designed by J. Meejin Yoon and Höweler + Yoon Architecture with Mural Arts Philadelphia and Bartram’s Garden.

Starting this fall, visitors to Bartram’s Garden and the Bartram’s Mile section of the Schuylkill River Trail will enjoy a rare, water-level view of an urban river in motion. That’s thanks to FloatLab’s unique ballast system, which allows its circular platform to rise and fall with the rhythm of the Tidal Schuylkill River. Get ready to reconnect with the life-sustaining, beating heart of our city through hands-on workshops, outdoor art programs, kayaking, fishing, and other riverfront activities.

Visit bartramsgarden.org/floatlab to sign up for project updates and be the first to hear about FloatLab grand opening events and public programming this fall.

The bright yellow ring-like structure is seen in time-lapse footage at the edge of a river, dwarfing workers in hard hats and nearby heavy machinery, with a red and white tugboat seen in the distance. The video pans out to show an aerial view of FloatLab being pulled by the tubgoat across a river on a beautiful sunny day. Video includes audio voiceover and subtitles.]

🎂 Happy 327th birthday, John Bartram! 🥳

John Bartram, who founded Bartram's Garden in 1728, was born on May 23 in 1699 in nearby Darby, Pennsylvania.

There are no images of John from his lifetime, so instead we imagine him here in his study, with east-facing windows looking out at the botanic garden that he cultivated and to which he and many others devoted so much time, skill, and care.

The room and the image are both dominated by the large, light-filled window; it is so sunny outside that the view beyond the window isn't visible. An antique wooden chair is set at an angle to the window; someone sitting there might be able to look back and forth between their work and the garden beyond.]
