Indian River Middle School

Indian River Middle School It Really Means Success! Welcome to the Middle School! Our Middle School educates some 880 students in grades 6, 7, and 8.

We hope that you will find it a challenging, enriching environment in which to learn, and grow, where you can explore new subjects, and participate in extra curricular activities such as clubs and sports. The students attending the Middle School are ethnically perse and bring with them experiences and unique cultures from around the world. Students in grades six, seven and eight are assigned to a t

eaching team which consists of four core subject teachers (Math, Science, English Language Arts, and Social Studies), a special area teacher, a special education teacher, and most importantly; approximately 70 to 90 fellow students. This smaller grade grouping allows students and faculty to work more closely together and provides the opportunity to more effectively meet the needs of each student. Average class size in grades 6,7 and 8 is between fourteen and eighteen students per classroom. The athletic facilities are second to none in the region. Our gymnasium is the largest and most modern in any school in northern New York State and your Middle School also houses an Olympic size swimming pool. The outdoor physical education and recreational facilities are a matter of District and community pride. Each classroom has ceiling mounted projectors, SmartBoards, Document Camera's and student's have access to lap top Net books or Chrome Carts. We also have four general purpose computer labs in the building, two of which are instructional classrooms in the library and contain large projection equipment used for special student work and multimedia presentations. All computers are connected to the District's Local Area Network and the regional BOCES and can access the Internet. The Board of Education and the community have made a tremendous investment in computer technology for our schools and this is very evident in the integration of computer technology into every facet of our academic programs. Considerable investment has also been made in training the staff to use and incorporate this technology into their day to day lessons. Other specialized classrooms such as our technology labs house a CAD/CAM computer lab, Chrome Book technology. The Family and Consumer Science classrooms were recently renovated and have new kitchen facilities. There are five science labs, a multi-purpose physical education teaching station, a choral room, band room, orchestra practice room, and two art rooms located in various portions of the building. The academic program for the Middle School is delivered through an eight period day, with a HomeBase offered at the end of each day. Our school is set up with teams and the hallways house the teams for each grade. The 6th grade classes and teams are on the same floor. As you familiarize yourself with our building our teachers will assist in getting you from from your special area classes (art, music, physical education, foreign language and lunch) so you don't have to worry about getting lost or being late to a class. A week is actually six days since the Middle School operates on a six day cycle (but we don't come to school on weekends). The curriculum at our Middle School is both challenging and creative, modeling “Best Practices” . The Common Core Curriculum has been adapted and applied in our ELA and Math areas as well as incorporated in all content areas.

Antwerp Primary and Middle School partner sharing

On March 18, 2026, twenty middle school students visited Antwerp Primary School to collaborate with Mrs. Patterson’s and Mrs. Hughes’ kindergarten classes. Students from Mrs. Moore’s Family and Consumer Sciences class sewed stuffed creatures based on designs the kindergarteners had created earlier in the year during art class with Mrs. Carlow.
During the visit, Ms. Mandigo, the librarian at Antwerp Primary, provided books titled Chilly Da Vinci by J. Rutland, which the middle school students read aloud to the kindergarteners. The visit concluded with the middle schoolers presenting the handmade sewing creatures to their kindergarten partners.
