Indian River Intermediate School

Indian River Intermediate School Inspiring Responsible Intellectual Students Welcome to the home of the 4th and 5th grade students of the Indian River Central School District.

At the Intermediate School we strive to provide a quality education facilitated by highly qualified teachers and support staff. Our school of nearly 700 students is nestled in the quaint countryside of Jefferson County. Our goal is to support and encourage each child in achieving his/her optimum potential by instilling in them an intrinsic sense of worth, curiosity and love of learning. The Interm

ediate School is fortunate to have a partnership with the Fort Drum Army Installation. One of the many wonderful aspects of our school is that we are home to the children of the brave men and women of the United States Army - 10th Mountain Division. It is the persity and wealth of life experience that our students bring that makes our school shine. We are proud to have the military as part of our school community. The Intermediate School understands the importance of creating a school climate that allows our children to feel valued and safe. To this end we place a great deal of our focus on developing children with good character. A primary goal of our school is to teach our children what it means to be a person of compassion, acceptance, and respect. Throughout the year we will place emphasis in our curriculum of including valuable character traits (Trustworthiness, Fairness, Respect, Responsibility, Caring, Citizenship, Anti-Bullying). We also feel it is important to highlight the outstanding character that our students demonstrate throughout the year through recognition on our "Wall of Characters." We look forward to partnering with home on this initiative as we work to raise emotionally balanced, socially compassionate, and caring inpiduals. We are committed to the success of our school and more importantly our children. Please consider us more than a school, we operate our school with a family like environment and feel. We want our students, families, and visitors to feel welcome and at home. We invite and encourage parent and community involvement so please feel free to call or stop in the office.

On Thursday, May 21, 2026, our IRIS school community gathered together for a special memorial tree planting ceremony in honor of Mrs. Jodi Baytos, a long-time special education teacher whose impact on our school will never be forgotten. Staff, students, family members, and friends came together to celebrate her life, dedication, and the countless ways she supported and cared for those around her throughout her years of service. The ceremony served as a meaningful opportunity to reflect on the positive influence she had on generations of students and colleagues.

Mrs. Baytos was known for her quiet kindness, compassion, and unwavering commitment to helping every child feel valued and supported. She touched the lives of so many through her patience, warmth, and gentle spirit, leaving a lasting legacy within our school community. The memorial tree will stand as a living tribute to her memory and as a reminder of the care, kindness, and dedication she shared with all who had the privilege to know her. Mrs. Baytos is deeply missed, but her legacy will live on.

This was a great IR Snow Day Announcement 🤣❄️

⚠️SCHOOL CLOSED WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 21, 2026️⚠️

All Indian River Central schools are closed today due to continued heavy morning snow and wind in various areas of the district. Travel conditions will vary greatly from place to place today, with the heaviest snow in the southern areas (Calcium/Fort Drum). All areas will see AM snow, some sun, and then a return to snow later today. Winds will also be a factor in many areas. If you are out, please proceed with caution. Winds will make visibility difficult at times—especially as the day progresses. Please stay safe.

High School Students: Regents exams scheduled for today have been postponed until Thursday. Please look out for additional ParentSquare communication from the building later today.

For those impacted, this may be great "play snow." Dress for the cold, yet kids should spend some time burning energy outside if possible. Please enjoy today by playing traditional games inside and/or playing outside... Snow days can be fun!

Stay safe, stay healthy, stay warm, and please help your kids have a productive day (with a bit of fun as well!). Thank you!

PS Please be on the lookout for the snowday monster!

Today, on National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, we want to recognize and thank our two outstanding School Resource Officers for their dedication to our school community.
Our SROs, Deputy M. Young and Deputy J. Morrow, play an essential role in keeping our campus safe while also building positive relationships with our students, staff, and families. Their presence provides reassurance, guidance, and support each day, and we are grateful for the care and commitment they show to our school.
Please join us in thanking our School Resource Officers for the important work they do and for being valued members of our school family. 💙🚓
