Terrible headline, but important message "Some of it may sound trite, but the cumulative effects of this lifelong uglying and other-ing are real and disastrous; older people are ignored, sidelined and segregated. In healthcare they are dismissed and undertreated. In a crisis, they are an afterthought..."

“For years we’ve been warned about the limitations of our tattered, largely informal, and resource-scarce care economy. Now, we’re asking these caregivers—largely low paid, if they’re paid at all—to protect the elderly from a virus that even experts don’t yet fully understand.”

The bulk of frontline caregivers don’t have the backing of large medical institutions or associations to advocate for them in the midst of the coronavirus.

"The next time someone asks how old you feel, give them your chronological age with pride. After all, wouldn’t it be nice to release the internalized ageism that makes you feel like you’ve got to be younger than you really are?"

If there was a tried and true method for lowering blood pressure, decreasing social isolation and reducing the risk of disease and death while aging, would you embrace it? Study after study suggests that one factor can improve mental and physical health and contribute to a happier, longer life.

Hear! Hear! "Designers and companies of the world, you are badly serving an ever-growing segment of your customer base, a segment that you too will one day inhabit. Isn’t it time to reform: to make things that are functional and stylish, useable and accessible? Every ailment that I described that impacts the elderly is also present in people of all ages. Designs that make it easier for elderly people often are of equal value for younger people. In fact, for everyone. Help the elderly, and the results will help many more, including yourself, someday."

The world is designed against the elderly, writes Don Norman, 83-year-old author of the industry bible Design of Everyday Things and a former Apple VP.
