Philadelphia Peace Plaza

Philadelphia Peace Plaza Philadelphia Peace Plaza is the world's first public space dedicated to the memories of girls and women coerced into sexual slavery in the 30s and 40s.

Philadelphia Peace Plaza memorializes over 200,000 girls and women from Asia and Oceania who were removed from their homes and coerced into sexual slavery by the Imperial Armed Forces of Japan between 1932 and 1945 and those who courageously spoke out against this history. To be located at 805 S Front St in Philadelphia’s Queen Village neighborhood, within walking distance of the Independence Hall

and the Vietnam and Korean War Memorial at the Foglietta Plaza, the Statue of Peace is at the heart of this project. This plaza will speak directly from the experience of the girls and women everywhere and beckon the world to reflect on and change the pattern of inequality and violence that surrounds us. Created by Korean artists Seokyung and Unsung Kim in 2011 and over a dozen replicas installed worldwide since, the Statue of Peace (평화의 소녀상) has come to symbolize this journey of healing and peacemaking. Presented by the Philadelphia Peace Plaza Committee (PPPC), established in 2017, the plaza will be the world’s first public space entirely dedicated to the perished and surviving women who await the world to stand with them.

📌NEW DATE: MARCH 12📢 We are happy to announce that “Korea, Vietnam, and Afro-America: Our Shared Struggle for Peace & Democracy” will take place on Saturday, March 12 from 10am - 6pm at the Asian Arts Initiative (1219 Vine St.), in-person and via livestream format! We thank everyone who has expressed interest in our event for their patience so far.

We are excited to present a full day of programming, consisting of panel discussions, a screening of King’s Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence speech, an Afro-Asian dialogue among religious & political leaders in Philadelphia, and cultural performances.

Through this one-day event, we strive to present to the young generation the opportunity to learn of and inherit the great traditions of the Asian anti-colonial struggles and Black Freedom Movement for a better future.
