Today on we remember Blessed Hieromartyr Zenoviy Kovalyk — a Redemptorist, a zealous preacher, and a martyr who did not betray the truth of the Gospel in times of trial.

He was born on August 18, 1903, into a peasant family in the Ternopil region. From a young age he dreamed of the priesthood, and before entering the monastery he worked as a teacher in a village school. Even then, he stood out for his honesty and deep fidelity to God — never seeking compromise when it came to matters of faith. After entering the Redemptorists, he made his first monastic vows in 1926 and was sent to Belgium for studies in preparation for the priesthood.

After his ordination in 1932, Fr. Zenoviy returned to his homeland, where he began his ministry with great zeal. His word was living and powerful, and his sermons were inspiring and courageous. He was known as a “golden-mouthed” preacher, gifted in touching human hearts and leading people to God. His deep love for the Most Holy Mother of God was especially evident, and through his Marian devotion his missions bore abundant spiritual fruit.

During times of persecution, when many were forced into silence or cautious speech, Fr. Zenoviy was not afraid to speak openly against godlessness. Though warned about the danger of such bold preaching, he simply replied: “If it is God’s will, I will gladly accept even death, but as a preacher I will never betray my conscience.”

In December 1940, he was arrested by Soviet authorities. After numerous interrogations and brutal beatings, he was imprisoned in Lviv. Yet even there, he did not cease to be a priest: he prayed with fellow prisoners, heard confessions, supported them, and gave hope. In inhumane conditions, he remained a light for others.

In June 1941, during the Soviet retreat from Lviv, the NKVD began mass executions of prisoners. For Fr. Zenoviy, however, they prepared an especially cruel death. Recalling his sermons about the crucified Christ, they crucified him on the wall of a prison corridor. He died as a priest and as a witness to Christ — becoming like the One he had proclaimed throughout his life.

Blessed Hieromartyr Zenoviy Kovalyk, pray to God for us!

On this date, April 9, 2000, Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos was beatified in Vatican City. Fr. Seelos was one of five people declared Blessed. Five shrouded tapestries depicting the five Servants of God to be beatified hung from the façade of St. Peter’s Basilica during the ceremony. After Archbishop Francis Schulte of New Orleans read a brief biography of Fr. Seelos before the Holy Father, all eyes turned to view Seelos’ tapestry (pictured). The veil was drawn back to reveal an inspiring portrait of Blessed Seelos featuring St. John Neumann, immigrants, children, St. Mary’s Assumption church and even a steamboat on the Mississippi River. The original oil painting and tapestry are on display at the National Shrine of Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos. Come see it for yourself!

Did you know that at one point Joseph Dutton, companion and collaborator with two saints of Molokai, Hawaii, was at one time contemplating joining the Redemptorists? He lived at St. Alphonsus in New Orleans as a lay candidate brother and became good friends with Father Ferreol Girardey, C.Ss.R., whose picture can be seen over his shoulder in the image of Dutton in his office (see the article). https://www.nationalshrine.org/blog/who-was-joseph-dutton/?fbclid=IwdGRjcAQyQtVjbGNrBDJCYGV4dG4DYWVtAjExAHNydGMGYXBwX2lkDDM1MDY4NTUzMTcyOAABHvLJoIt9qxWK8Gr-utvQFMHyB-jJLzMrpb8MFNBUXqOBPMo5v8z6ViOwDbtP_aem_xZBD4mrOM-xLZDf7aKkqcQ

As we observe the 95th anniversary of Servant of God Joseph Dutton’s passing this year, we invite you to learn about his story.

I first met Fr. Panella when he was superior of the community in Rome. A few years ago he passed through Philadelphia and, with Fr. Donald Miniscalco, I was able to show him the archive and National Shrine of St. John Neumann. He was interested and engaged, with lots of energy and grace. RIP.
