WHO TEACHES A BOY TO BECOME A MAN?

A boy doesn’t become a man simply because he gets older. Somebody has to show him what accountability looks like. How to handle conflict without losing himself. How to communicate. How to lead. How to provide. How to love. How to make a mistake, own it and move differently the next time.

And when those examples aren’t there, something else will always be willing to teach him.

The streets will teach him.
Social media will teach him.
Survival will teach him.

That’s why the men who show up matter.

The fathers. The coaches. The mentors. The uncles. The neighbors. The men willing to correct, listen, challenge and walk beside him.
At Philly Truce, we call the destination sustainable Black manhood.

Not perfect men, men with the tools to sustain themselves, their families and the communities that depend on them.

So on this Mission Monday, we’re asking the question:

Who taught you how to be a man?

SOMETIMES YOU HAVE TO LET THEM SEE IT.

We can tell young people all day that they’re capable. Tell them they’re creative. Tell them they belong in certain rooms. Tell them there’s more out here for them.

But at some point, they need the opportunity to see it for themselves.

To take an idea and make something out of it. To learn something they didn’t know how to do before. To be challenged, get it wrong, try again and eventually look back at something they can say, “I did that.”

For some of our young people this summer, that moment happened when they helped create a short film. The red carpet was the celebration, but the work that got them there was the real story.

That’s why exposure and opportunity matter.

Because when a young person gets a chance to see what they’re capable of, you don’t have to keep telling them what’s possible.

Now they have proof.

Your Win Is My Win.

Big thank you to the St. Joe’s Prep basketball team.

They normally take the court together, but today they’re taking on the 5K together and running on behalf of Philly Truce.

This is what showing up looks like.

Young men using their presence to stand for their community, their peers and a city that deserves to see them grow.

Today, they’re not playing for points.

They’re running for something bigger.

We appreciate you, fellas. Now let’s run the city. 🫱🏽‍🫲🏾

TODAY, WE RUN THE CITY.

We’re 2 hours away from the 5K, and we’re lacing up our sneakers and asking you to Hug the Block with us.

This is about being visible and remembering that we are responsible for what happens here.

Visible for the families who need to know they’re not standing alone.
Visible for the young people watching us.
Visible in the same communities where too many lives have been lost.

So whether you’re running, walking, standing on the sideline or simply making some noise when we come through… Hug the Block with us.
