The Russell County Water Authority (RCWA) is monitoring the weather and working with Russell County EMA to ensure readiness. Although weather forecasts are expected to improve, we remain prepared for potentially severe conditions. Our preparations include testing backup power generation at well sites and booster pump stations, maintaining storage tanks at near-full capacity throughout the weekend, and verifying on-call staff are prepared to respond to challenges.
In response to frequently asked questions:
Q: Is there a risk of RCWA system pipelines freezing? A: No significant risk is anticipated due to flushing devices installed on exposed pipes on bridges.
Q: Will customers lose water during a power outage? A: No, critical infrastructure has modern backup power generation in place, and sustained outages are not expected but we are prepared.
Q: How can I prevent my house plumbing from freezing? A: For temperatures above 28 degrees, normal use is typically sufficient; below 28 degrees for extended periods, recommended dripping rates apply: 1 drip/second (12 oz/hour) for modern homes and 2 drips/second (24 oz/hour) for older or less insulated homes, with exterior faucet dripping also advised.
Should you experience an outage, or a loss of pressure, please call our 24hour line at (334) 297-3393 to report the issue and our crews will respond accordingly. Thank you!
