Friends of the Phelan Memorial Library Wants YOU
Friends of the Library are local residents and business members of a community who value public library service. They work as a membership and collectively believe that their library is one of the key elements that make their community a wonderful place to live.
Some 17 years ago the Serrano Friends of the Library was formed to support the joint-use county library branch housed in Serrano High School. In 2008, when the plan to build a stand alone library was announced, the friends group grew and worked to raise funds to provide books and materials to fill our wonderful new Phelan Memorial Library. They raised $25,000 that was matched by our County Supervisor and our new library opened with full shelves.
In those 17+ years the members have become grandparents and great grandparents and today fresh energy and ideas are needed to carry on with this important effort. Our mission includes promoting library events, raising funds to help purchase supplies and fund special events, managing our used book store and conducting book sales, supporting Summer Reading Programs for children and young adults, recruiting volunteers and increasing public awareness of library needs.
If you have talents in social media, we need you. If you believe that books open the world for the reader, we need you. If you just retired and want to use your skill set and support your community, we need you. If you are young and want to add some community service to your resume, we need you. If you enjoy spending time with like minded people who treasure public libraries, we need you and all those mentioned above to help our Friends of the Phelan Memorial Library continue to pursue our mission into the future.
