Bay View was founded in 1875 by Michigan Methodists as a camp meeting "for intellectual and scientific culture and the promotion of the cause of religion and morality." From its beginning, the Association has welcomed persons of any denominational affiliation who have desired to assist in perpetuating the Association's principles and purpose. By the late 1800's, the Bay View Association had become a pioneering institution in public education. It boasted an ambitious summer university, a Chautauqua series attracting tens of thousands of visitors, and a home-study program enrolling men and women across the nation. During this period, the raw territory where the early "tent city" was built was transformed into a resort community of such Victorian charm that in 1987, Bay View was designated a National Historic Landmark.

From tending gardens and caring for our natural spaces to creating meaningful experiences for all generations, every contribution helps Bay View flourish.

We’re delighted to share that Jan and Jeff Arnold have been nominated for the 2026 Dwight Lund Community Champion Award through America in Bloom!

For years, Jan and Jeff have led the volunteer efforts to care for Bay View’s Memorial Garden, a beautiful and meaningful place of remembrance for our community. Their dedication, along with the time and care of fellow volunteers, has helped preserve this special space for generations to come.

For the past two years, Bay View has participated in America in Bloom, and both years, the judges have been deeply impressed by the beauty of the Memorial Garden and the thoughtful care that goes into maintaining it. Behind that beauty are dedicated people who give generously of their time and talents, and Jan and Jeff are wonderful examples of that spirit.

Please join us in celebrating Jan and Jeff and thanking them, along with all the volunteers who help care for this treasured place. Their commitment reflects the very best of Bay View: a community that honors its history, cares for one another, and works together to preserve what matters.

The Holdovers is a comedy-drama about a strict, disliked history teacher at a New England prep school who is forced to stay on campus over Christmas break in 1970 to supervise the students who cannot go home.

Bay View Campus Club raised $20,000 this year for Manna Food Project to alleviate hunger. Manna Executive Director Carrie Klinglesmith recently attended Campus Club Potluck to recognize this generosity.

Thank You, Memorial Garden Volunteers 🌿

As another season comes to a close, we’re grateful to the volunteers who helped put the Bay View Memorial Garden to bed for the season.

A special thank you to Jan and Jeff Arnold, who chair the Memorial Garden Committee, for their thoughtful leadership and ongoing care of this treasured place. We’re also grateful to Matthews Nursery, whose staff generously volunteer their time to help with this special task each year.

The Memorial Garden is a peaceful and meaningful place in our community—a place of remembrance, reflection, and connection. We appreciate everyone who gives their time and care to ensure it remains beautiful and welcoming.

Thank you for caring for this special part of Bay View. 💚
