During the 1930s, through a remarkable Works Progress Administration (WPA) project, the women of the PGC worked with African-American women of Petersburg to establish a botanical preserve in Lee Park with a herbarium collection and watercolors. During the Sanctuary's creation native and rare species were identified, a herbarium collected, exquisite paintings executed, specimens planted and nurture

d, and over ten miles of paths developed throughout the park. Although in continuous use as a city park and recreation area, the 25-acre Sanctuary has been virtually unmanaged for over a half a century with much of the original flora and fauna documented and installed during the WPA project remaining. As part of an ongoing effort to restore Lee Park the Garden Club is working to establish a Stewardship and Management Plan for the park including new trailheads, outdoor classrooms, and plant rescue areas along with restored interpretive trails throughout the sanctuary.

Native American tribes used fire to modify their landscapes in many significant ways prior to the arrival of European settlers. Purposefully set fires by natives helped promote the valued resources and habitats that sustained indigenous cultures, economies, traditions, and livelihoods. The cumulative ecological impacts of Native American fire use over time has resulted in a mosaic of grasslands and forests across North America that was once widely perceived as untouched, pristine wilderness. It is now recognized that the original American landscape was already humanized at the time that the first European explorers, trappers, and settlers arrived.
